Double Bass Experience with upton bass?

I have a Shen 90 and it sounds as good as a plywood can. A few years back i heard a gentleman playing his new Upton ply and he LOVED it. He said it was the best bass he had ever owned. I listened to and played it and thought. .. .this is one dead sounding Bass. Just goes to show...... something. ....

i've had similar experiences with basses I couldn't put down quick enough - that someone else loved.

in defense of upton, i bet it we took that ply in for a setup and a set of your favorite strings it would be a lot better. who knows what weird stuff that guy had going on - i knew a guy years ago who insisted he liked the sound of his bass (a crappy Chinese bass anyway) with the soundpost directly under the bridge foot. his bass sounded horrific.

like you said, goes to show... something...

This is a great point. I think my LaScala hybrid set up with Dominants over a Spiro Stark E (set at 7-10mm G to E) plays perfectly and sounds like the voice of god. But it's a setup specific to me that few other visiting pros want to deal with. From a large number of visiting bassists who visited my school and asked to borrow a bass for their performances, only Christian McBride chose the LaScala. When players like Eddie Gomez, Lynn Seaton, John Goldsby, Rufus Reid, etc. have borrowed a bass, they have always chosen the office Shen SB100 plywood because it is set up with low string height with more forgiving strings. They make it sound great, but I have trouble finding my voice on it.

There is a lot to be said for strings and setup! When you are trying any bass from any maker, if it doesn't have strings you know and like on it, and/or if the string height is not what you are used to, there is a good chance that you won't be crazy about it for these reasons....both of which have little to nothing to do with the bass.

kinda like asking weather or not you should marry a girl, listing only her ethnicity and profession.

i'm not even saying we need more information, just that it's really up to you - though opinions are mixed here, you are definitely not getting ripped off with an upton. they're a big name in the bass market for a reason. if you like it, get it.

thank you! it is about 7 years old. sound good to my ear. Any comment on expensive upton build quality? Seems solid to me. resale value?
thanks in advance!

a while back when i visited the shop i spent some time with 2 or 3 (i forget) uptons in the high price bracket. I was very impressed with all of them, especially that ISB bass... which may still be available?

if it's the bass for you, get it!

I recently ordered an Upton Standard Ply. I have never played one. I listened to Lucia Turino play her ply travel bass live and was really impressed with the sound and the apparent playability. That kind of sold me. I had three phone conversations with the guys (mainly Eric) at upton which surpassed any customer service experience I have ever had with any company ever ... ever. I had been eying an upton standard hybrid and before hearing Turino. A good friend who plays a full carved in orchestra gave me some direction on sound and related an experience he had with an upton and I was convinced that a ply would suit me better so I dove in. I have a ply bass that I learned on and the amount of work and money I put into it getting it to be reasonably playable was kind of ridiculous. The cost of used plys I've seen in addition to setups and strings gets out of hand so fast. All that said I have zero fear that what I receive will be the best bass I could buy at the appropriate cost. Now I'm just scouring the net for pics of Uptons to pacify me until mine arrives ;)
