Well, I bought these strings and slapped them on my thunderbird at first, with the intent of using that tuning. The set is from Circle K (.182, .136, .100, .076) and they aren't big enough for a full octave down, so I tuned them up to F# and have been very happy with it. Even happier with them on my P-bass. Sounded like crap on the Thunderbird. Maybe I'll go for the full octave down sometime later this year, but for now, sticking with F#.

Sounds good, man. That's my plan for the Dingwall (F# standard) and to use the Detuner to hit E for a project I'm working on.

I'll take a number.
I have wanted a fifth string since the first time I played with another person, I just love getting under them and coming back up to it.
That said, I found/find myself never using the G. Never. EVER. Sooooo, I started stringing my 4 string basses with the bottom 4 of a 5 string set (BEAD). "No detuning here, I needs me some tension!" Just takes a second to get the nut right, a quick adjust, and you're ready to roll. First bass I did it with was a cheap fretless SX, I've never looked back.

Currently, Thunderitter is finishing my latest ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]).

No not yet, I'm still not sure if I want to do this, I'm not a luthier and all my builds are done because when you are lefthanded there isn't that much available, certainly not for the price I can build them for myself.

For the seven string I've got enough photos of the building progress.

For the six string I don't, this was an recent upgrade build of the bass I made 15 years ago.
I converted it to fretless with a new fingerboard, put a nice piece of topwood on it, thinned down the neck and body, and also did some other small improvements and modifications, but I didn't take that much photos during this conversion.

I think that it would be a great addition to the luthiers forum, informative and useful to others that might want to make one for themselves... even if you don't fully consider yourself a luthier, you did in fact build your own bass.

Question from someone with no experience on ERBs.. Anyone use octave strings on here? I was thinking EADG, a full octave lower, but eight string with standard eadg strings as the octaves. Besides being a whole lot of string, wouldn't that sound huge?

I asked in the 8-string (octave) club thread, and nobody had tried it. I suspect you'll need to seriously adjust the between-string spacing between octave strings so that they don't smack against each other.

I'm going to take a piece of plywood, some spare tuners, and a spare pickup this week and make a testing facility to try it out with my old Octave4Plus strings to see more or less what kind of spacing would be needed to pull it off. I'm rather curious too. If it doesn't work out so well, I'll try it with a guitar-sized E-string, so there will be a two-octave gap.

EDIT: Pinewood (a 2x4). Plywood wouldn't really be necessary.

I have a question for the 6 string bass players. What kind of music do you play with your 6'ers? I got my first 5 string bass back in December of '09 and I really like the extended lower range. I have never thought that I was the "kind of player" who would do justice to a 6 string bass, but lately I'm intrigued by them....and I don't know why.

For some reason I have this idea in my head that a 6 string bass would best serve those who are more into a solo type of playing...and I am NOT a solo type of player.
