My neighbor recently showed me a "Fender Jazz" bass he bought at a pawn shop for a couple of hundred bucks.

He was so excited about it, I didn't have the heart to tell him it was a fake. On the upside though, he's probably gotten his money's worth in playing enjoyment out of the deal.

I've been to Carey's shop a few times and run into him at a bar more than once. He's a cool dude. I would feel terrible buying this. That doesn't mean I can't be curious about it though.

A lot of the fakery over here is circular: mainland China makes cheap knockoffs of various US brands; US brands won't distribute to mainland China, so mainland China fakes their stuff. A few years ago the stuff would be labelled "Dillon" or "Rockinbetter" or whathave you, now it's escalated to putting the actual name of what they're faking..

At the end of the day, Carey's market consists of individuals who can appreciate the difference between a $6000 bass vs. a $300 copy made in China. AliExpress really isn't making a dent in his potential sales.

I don't think it's about lost sales either, for me it's about capitalizing on someone else's designs and good name, and maybe tainting that name by associating it with lower quality products.

I always thought "face" was important in the east, but apparently not in business where anything goes and you can copy anything and everything. No honour.
