Fat Thick Warm and Clean

I grew up listening to the 60's Motown...maybe that is the tone in my head....sounds like the P bass is what I need....current tube amp I have is a 400+

Motown = P + flats.

Something must be said for stretched out, dirty, funky old flatwounds on a P-bass. Try to find some used ones from buddy, or if you have to go with a new set, be sure you stretch them out repeatedly. Maybe even wipe them down with a little oil so dust and dirt and grime collects on them. Simulates the grime that builds up on your strings playing out all the time. Also try shoving a small piece of foam under your strings near the bridge, and pluck the strings somewhere between the P-pickup and the neck.

Ya mean the Skynnrd version? I agree, it's awesome. Very punchy, but IMHO, not what I would call fat. But I love it.

To me, fat tone is Rescue Me (Fontella Bass) or My Girl (Temptations). P bass with old flats, and tubes.

I guess it's all in how we define the terms in our heads. For me "Punchy" would be something like Never Been Any Reason by Head East.
