Worst Star Trek Episode S03E15.jpg Season 3, Episode 15; "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". But, it's not for the reasons you might think. My sister, who got whatever she wanted (and, to this day, thinks she still should) wanted to watch Star Trek - so we all watched Star Trek. Or, went outside, or something. Some episodes - like the one with Khan, and the one on the Gangster Planet (A Piece Of The Action)- I thought were very good. The episodes with Harry Mudd were always funny. The rest of them? Sorry, but IMO they ranged from OK, to Meh, to Very Lame. And somewhere in Season Two, Star Trek got very preachy, social consciousness-wise. While I do agree with Gene Roddenberry's premise and vision, I don't care for heavy-handed preachiness... I really tried to like the show, but I wound up trying to avoid it. This episode is my favorite because it made me just... stop trying, and give up. I never watched another episode, and I have watched very few episodes of any of the other Star Treks. Just enough to convince me that I need to watch something else. To be honest, I watched - and loved - Doctor Who, long before Star Trek came along. I still prefer The Doctor - and Dalek.jpg these guys...

The original series is the foundation but next generation is the heart of what the franchise is all about, IMO. I can understand not liking it if you’ve only seen a few episodes of the original.

Throughout your entire "roll"...you didn't mention how/who/why the Away Team is (more often than not) comprised of your-
CO
XO
1st Medical Officer
1st Science Officer
Chief Engineer
Security Chief
A couple of comments, or so...
On the Original Series the XO & 1st Science Officer were the same person-with the exception of the first pilot (number One was XO) & arguably the second (A case could be made Gary Mitchell was the XO in that one)
The Original Series also never had a designated Security Chief...

As well they also didn't have Away teams--they had landing parties

Maybe that's nitpicking, but just had to comment

As to the actual question, there were variations, but the main reason they would often send the Captain and his first officer on the landing party was they were the stars--they made the big bucks among the cast--not an in story reason, but they did play with that in the episode, The Ultimate Computer.
