Favourite 80's pop bassist?

Well, I would have said John Taylor, except the early posts in this thread saying he didn't play all the Duran Duran bass lines was a surprise to me. Anyone have a link or citation for that? How much DID he play?

May as well say Chris Squire. 80s Yes counts as a pop band, don't they? For that matter, you could argue the same for Rush around the Power Windows/Grace Under Pressure era, so why not Geddy Lee?

Sara Lee also came to mind -- she played a lot of the bass lines for the B-52s, like Love Shack. Classic case of a session player without whom the band would not have had the success they did.

And in that same vein, Lee Sklar. Was just listening to "Sussudio." Where would that song be without its bass groove? In fact, what is worth listening to in that song other than the bass?

Tony Levin playing with Peter Gabriel on the "So" album.

JT never said that he didn't play the basslines for DD. What he DID say was that while they were in the writing and recording process he would frequently overdub lines and then have to learn to play them live later (which he always did) lol

In the Classic Albums Rio episode he was specifically referring to the Hold Back the Rain bassline which has 2 completely seperate parts and other pops which he overdubbed. He said it's a bitch to play live, but I've seen him do it :)

On a seperate note, I just saw DD in May at the House of Blues in Chicago and in that small space you could hear EVERYTHING.. no room for error. The whole floor was vibrating with JT's bass and it certainly is the backbone of DD's sound. If anyone has seen them live they can attest to the fact that he is an EXCELLENT live performer (which in my opinion is everything cause you can lay down whatever in the studio, it's out on the stage that counts)
