fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

The IPR is a great amp!!! And I'd love to hear a fEARful.

I gigged my IPR1600 + 15/6 for the first time on Saturday.

Solo it sounded pretty good, big grin good.

At rehearsal volume it sounded very good.

At the gig it was putting me off playing just listening to it, once you get the IPR wound up a bit the 15/6 starts to come into it's own and that was just one side (325W max IIRC). I can't wait to try it bridged in a bigger venue.

I was going to tame those LEDs but quite like them now so have decided to leave them.

Well, if you can wait a bit, I'm again taking one for the team to see what the current build is like. I'll post up detail close-up pictures, exact weight, and a few clips with various heads and basses as soon as I get it and give it a couple hours to open up, etc.

Testing out a new rig today: the Zoom B9.1 ut as preamp going into the Carvin HD1500.

First results are sounding good. I put the Zoom into the Carvin with a pair of xlr cables and hooked one side to the 15/6 and the other side to the 12/6 cube. Carvin's manual says I get 300 watts per side with that setup.

I couldn't run it up all the way, as the noise complaints started real quick. The Zoom seemed to be providing plenty of output to the Carvin.

If that's the low power set up, I can't wait to hear the Carvin bridged: 1500 watts at 4 ohm. I need to finish the second 15/6/1's crossover. Once the pair is done I'll have a bitchin PA setup with the little mixer and the Carvin poweramp. Not bad for a $300 poweramp!

Looks like the Zoom will finally start pulling its weight around here.

I've been swamped at work, and I'm playing a musical (four shows each weekend) so I haven't had much time to play it, but so far, it appears to be a killer cab!

I also just received a Thunderfunk TFB800-B2, which I ordered specifically for this cabinet. After hearing the cab, I think the TF will be a superb fit.

I'll post pics and a review in the next week or so. Ron's work is amazing and deserves more exposure! (And of course, Greenboy's designs are equally amazing!)

Hey Greg, I'm interested in your opinion of this cab once you get some time in. I know that you were somewhat skeptical of what many of us have been saying over time about these, so I think your experiences and take on things would be interesting for many of us.

On a completely different note, we've been spending some time woodshedding with a "new" project since my band of a number of years lost an integral member or two. We've found a great new drummer (from Africa by way of Germany), and a couple other new members and we've taken that a sign to shelve all the old material and write an all new set from the ground up.

This week (and for the next several) we're recording 'live' in our practice studio 16 track digital to hear and refine and write our material. Its a REAL treat to have a high quality preamp (Kern IP-777) along with my fEARful cabs (only using my 15/6 to keep bleed down) and really be able to hear what I'm sending to 'tape' in the live setting. This morning I sat down to 3 hours of rough mix for everyone, and it was wonderful not to have to EQ and massage my bass sound...it recorded just as I heard it last night. Talk about 'studio monitor' style sound.

Update on the Carvin HD1500 power amp. It fried. There may have been damage in shipping, though it was well packed and the box didn't show any obvious signs of abuse, there was some loose debris rattling around in the case and falling out of the vents.

I had some 30 minutes of good results with my mixer into the power amp, but there had already been some ugly noises and nasty distortion. It finally quit for good, and no amount of messing around would get it working.

I tested all my signals from the mixer and the Zoom, no problems there. I had the amp set up with a fEarful on each side, so 300 watts at 8 ohms per side. It wasn't like I was stressing the amp, I never got it to clipping before I was going for the earplugs. Thomas Dolby and the Lost People never sounded so good! Massive bass, and great highs and mids considering there were no horns in the setup. The fEarfuls are very full range cabs. I'm really excited to get the second 15/6/1 finished to have a pair for the PA setup.

A phone call to Carvin's service department got me a prepaid return shipping label by email the promise that replacement HD 1500 was on the way. Can't ask for more than that! Maybe I'll have better luck with the next one.

Bill, I've finally finished the musical I've been playing for the last month, so I'll be back to doing the showband stuff. NYE, we're at the Columbia Tower in Seattle. The venue is smallish so I won't be pushing the 1212/6/1 very hard. But I'll at least get a chance to hear it live. (Hopefully with my Kern IP-777, which is on its way back to me from Les Plopa. What a great guy!)

I'll share my thoughts about the cabinet when I've got a little playing time into it.

Cool. The Kern with a high power amp to fuel a fEARful cab or two is pretty magical to me. You get that really clean full tube sound, but with definition and precision at some amazing volumes if you want. The Kern is an interesting animal since you can get that modern wide tone but also get that rich 3D tube feel.

Hi all. Long time no see. Been busy with family, work and life in general. Have been practicing quite a bit and have gotten better so I'm excited about that. :bassist: The more I play my fEarful, the more I love it. I've never been this excited about any piece of gear before. Months later I can definitively say this is the last cab I'll ever need. Except for the 15Sub I'm building, ergo this post. I need to de pad the mid.

My 15/6/1 uses the circuit board mounted crossovers from Leland. All the components on mine are hot-glued down and soldered. Is there a way to bypass the mid-pad bank of resistors without taking the crossover apart? Maybe cut the leads and wire in jumper wires connected to a switch? I'm no electrical engineer so I'd appreciate a little help. "A Little Help" as in "Please tell me what to do." :help:

If I need to buy a new crossover and start from scratch, so be it. Thanks and keep this thread rolling along!
