Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

That's awesome! Congratulations. IIRC when I built mine, the 3015LF was selling between $150~$170. I ended up with mine for $135 including shipping. Of course that makes the 15sub a very reasonable expense, given the lesser component cost and the fact that I had many leftovers from my first build.

So, I'm planning to build a 15Sub and then add a head case with the 6+1 later containing the requisite parts. However, I can confer the difficulty finding quality 1/2" birch ply in the midwest.

I am thinking of using 3/4" birch from Menards (a big box in the midwest, but they have much better quality than the stuff HD or Lowes is selling now) and adjusting the plans to accommodate the difference without changing the interior volume or bracing specifications (I'll use the 1/2" for the bracing).

Does anyone see any problems with this? I don't really care about the weight - anything that isn't as heavy as my 2x15 JBL mains constructed of the finest 3/4" MDF would be fine ;) I just want to make sure that the panels will be rigid enough since the wood used for the interior layers in the "birch" is suspect... besides it is wavy as heck but the 3/4" stuff seems to be much better.

Also wondered if using the 3/4" instead of 1/2" would put it in the nEaRfUl category.

I find that remarkable in light of 14,000 + posts and 800,000 + views in this series alone.

If the point of these threads is to point that out, I think that has been accomplished, wouldn't you agree?

I'm one of those who was unaware -- a newb both to bass and to fEARful (though I've played keyboards and guitar for years). And as one considering having a pair of 15/6/1s built in the next few months, I'd note that I both learned about fEARful cabinets and about nEARful "similar" cabinets originally from this thread. It would probably be healthy if a quick FAQ were the first post in each new iteration of the fEARful Part XX thread to cover the basics.

I applaud your comments Thor...and through reading fEARful posts for the past 6 months or so, I've decided to NOT purchase a fEARful because of the arrogant nature of certain owners and the lack of proper build continuity among different "authorized" builders...

Too much for me...

I'm sure the cabs are wonderful but I've heard enough of the "attitude"

Peace...

I've rarely purchased (nor NOT purchased) a piece of gear (or anything else) based on the attitudes of "certain owners."

Last time I did that was because a certain owner of Girl Scout Samoas was all over me telling me it was the bestest cookie ever was. And I like Thin Mints.

Hey dspellman, glad to hear your considering one. If you do have specific questions, let us know.

Lots of people are still just catching on to the fEARful thing: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/official-fearful-club-843759/index15.html#post12280007

;)

And since this isn't like a standard company/product history, it can be confusing.

And Thin Mints are definitely great...lower in fat than samoas, and can be frozen or used with sweet delicious ice cream.

Yeah that sure does sound wack when you say it out loud.

"Giving up" on a piece of kit because damn near everyone who tries one is convinced it is better than the crap we all used to use doesn't make much sense - does it?

:rollno:

After all, when a large group of people are firmly convinced they have gear better than yours - it is worth considering that they are right. If your ego needs consolation consider that they have better gear than they themselves had - until recently. So their opinion might not be ego - it might be physics - it is possible.

But working with gear that is upstream of commodity status requires a certain amount of effort/research/expense/patience/maturity/willingness to take risks, that many are not willing or perhaps able to afford/accomplish. That's OK by me - but if you whine about it I will recall that famous aphorism:

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes an even bigger man to laugh at that giant pussy. :hyper:

I'm in the Chicago are and the Menard's near me has 1/2" Baltic. There is also Owl hardwoods and Wood World who both have it

Hey Mike,

Really? Which one? I am about 1/2 hour outside of Chicago in NW Indiana.

The ones out here have birch plywood that has several layers but didn't think it was actual birch. If it is, then I am all set - no need to mod GB plans for the external dimensions.

Based on thorough review of recent Art Of Noise builds, correspondence with customers, customer polling, and frank and detailed discussion with Robby Hoinsky, Art of Noise has been reinstated as an authorized fEARful builder. I think he gets what is required and really wants to deliver it, has shown marked improvement and understanding of all issues, so I am giving him the chance.

I am glad you found benefit in this information. The fearful threads are prominently linked in the FAQ's. My advice to readers is start at the beginning and 'follow the Yellow Brick Road'. With 14 threads already, there is plenty to follow.

I have no horse in this race one way or another. I was about to close this thread yesterday as I am seeing a few issues about the whole situation I am uncomfortable with. There was a major announcement stickied recently about behavior, and quite frankly, the word that comes to mind in this thread is acrimonius. And the changed CUP situation.

OTOH, we tolerate numerous 'I love Ampeg' threads so that an analogy can be made to the situation. What we don't tolerate are 'I hate XYZ' threads or XYZ bashing in the Ampeg threads. By similar analogy, now that fEARful has become a commercial enterprise, bashing competitors will cease or the threads will be closed.

I sense we are getting pretty close the finish line in that race. I have no desire to do that, but the bashing will stop.

Wrong, Thor. Well before I ever had a "franchise" I contacted David Wilson and said it was possible that soon I would have a mild commercial venture. And I contacted him again when it was just about to start. And I followed what he wrote back to me, with consideration given that I was still supporting DIYers.

I refer to the endorsement line disclosure. The one visible to the public updated a few weeks ago based on our latest discussion.

I am an AoN customer, and FWIW, Robby has always been available via e-mail to answer questions. I own one of his 15/6/1 prototypes, which I got for a steal and I currently have a 15 sub in the works. He has my full confidence and I am happy that he has been reinstated as an official fEARful builder. :hyper:
