fEARful part nine (9)

I'm hoping to have them together this week minus the grills. I still don't know what I'm going to do with the grills yet.

I'll post my thoughts as soon as I can. It might not be until the end of the week.

Thanks Jim.

However if I did it all over again I would prime the entire box with primer first. There are some spots that don't look real good. No one is going to mistake this for a factory made speaker.

Thanks Mike.

I probably could've gotten away with one 15/6/1 but I thought it would look cool stacked with the one on top upside down. I'll be using them with a DPC1400X bridged. I can't wait to compare them with my Acme LowB 2s.

I've never played through a fEARful, but have read every post in all of the fEARful threads (Wow...is that sad or smart?). So I'll make an educated assumption that TWO fEARful15/6/1's will stomp the hell out of two Acme LowB2's. The fEARfuls, when built to spec, are the epitome of bass cabs. That's why I've saved my money and not gone with an Ampeg Fridge, or Ye Olde 2 x 15 or Olden Eighties 2 x 410 stack, etc.

I'm just lacking the tools to build anything at the moment, but I'm moving back into a house in May. I WILL be building multiple fEARfuls and can't wait.

I put a ton of effort into prepping for finish.

I filed to get things flush. Then used a paper thin wood filler as a sealer / fill coat. That got sanded with 80, then 120 then 240. One coat of black latex over the whole thing.

Finish was two coats of roller Duratex, except for the baffle and port interiors (two coats there, to.) It turned out looking store bought.

I went through all that effort after putting a couple of scraps together and then trying different prep methods. I was nervous about how it would turn out.

Some time ago I had read a post from one of the Genz Benz guys about how much more prep they felt these kind of coatings need to look good. That was the source of my nervousness.

Jim

Well at least my finish won't effect the sound. I'm not sanding and starting over so it'll have to do. If I ever do it again I know what I need to do.

The Duratex instructions say you don't need primer. Next time I think I would coat the whole thing with durabond then sand and then prime.

Someone here (sorry, don't remember who) got a crossover from Speaker Hardware. I got my drivers and hardware there (before Leland offered Xover kits for fEARfuls).

I think he's close to having complete kits (including pre-cut panels) ready for 15/6 and 12/6 Cube.

If you look around the site, you can find everything you need, including fasteners. Everything he sells seems to be top notch.

The baffle is painted on one. Now one to go.

First coat finished.

Damn... they are so light they float in the air - must be that nidacore stuff everyone's been talking about.

I got a 1515/66 and a 15/6+15sub stack - oddly enough the 1515/66 is generally easier to move [tilt and go], but I think stairs would work the other way - I reckon modular would work better on the stairway. You might even consider doing a 12/6+12sub - I think I would if stairs were a requirement for every load out.

It's not nidacore. It's unobtainium very hard to come by but they very easy to move around. Getting them to stay on stage can be difficult though.
