fender 70's precision

GC can get stuffed. They are liars...pure and simple. I can't believe in this day and age they don't have an ordering system that actually updates itself so that the minute it is no longer available the client doesn't waste his or her time filling out all the payment details and ending up dissapointed.

aren't the MIJ basses better quality than the MIM ones?

I think, generally speaking, many people would agree with that. But the MIM's are pretty underrated IMHO.

I have a 2010 MIM Standard that rivals any CIJ/MIJ P Bass I've ever played.

DSCN7354.jpg

But my comment wasn't intended to compare and contrast MIM and CIJ, I was saying you could get a quality block and bound neck from AllParts (Japanese made incidentally), and a modest alder body finished and loaded, and you would approximate the '70s Precision pretty well (assuming it was put together right).

Yeah, they are cool, but at the original price tag ($849.00), that's a little steep, considering it's approximately an MIM Standard with a bound and blocked neck.

You could build that bass with an AllParts neck and aftermarket body/hardware for around $500.00.

I have absolutely no interest in doing that. I'd rather Fender do it for me, and from all I've ever seen, that price is not out of line for a Japanese Fender.

I just bought one! (the white one)
it's pretty damn cool! It light (lighter than other p-basses I've tried) and the neck is wide but not that chunky. The gloss on the neck is amazing, so smooth. Not the fastest neck in the world, but that's pretty normal for a p-bass. Overall amazing instrument.

Guitar Center Update:

So I ordered mine on Oct 18. for the $528 price. I got a confirmation by email. the next day I got a backorder notification. There is still a pending charge on my CC. I called GC today. I was told that someone would have to get back to me as the part number did not exist in their system. My order is evidently still valid and has not been cancelled-yet. I'm not holding out much hope though. Clearly what happened is someone advertised the bass on their website putting in the sale price as the MSRP. The sale price was automatically calculated from the erroneous list price. now they are trying to backtrack by acting like they never heard of it. The right thing to do is to sell the bass for the price it was advertised, and then take the difference out of the budget for whoever manages the website. maybe it would teach them not to be so careless. I mean I have a confirmation with pricing and a part number with description and all of a sudden no one can find it in the computer??? Some one is trying to cover their behind and the loser is the customer.

Here's some pics of my white one......

I've since changed the pickguard to a cream color pickguard and I'm going to change the bridge to a Gotho black bridge and the tuners to Hipshots black tuners. Just waiting on the tuners, now.

Note: This finish is more of a Vintage White finish. I swear (and so does the wifey) that there's a hint of cream in this finish. I like it.

I really love these frets. These "Vintage Style" frets are great. I've never been into Jumbo frets, or Medium Jumbo frets (I deal with them because they're on almost every bass out on the market). But I much prefer low and wide, or like these..."Vintage Style".

I had exactly the same thing you did and they had the same lame excuse. At the very least they could have come up with another option but at the end of the day they don't seem to give a crap. To be honest I would have been happier had someone had the balls to fess up and admit they messed up. Definitely lost a customer here......

For those who managed to get the bass...congrats! They look awesome.

They dont give a **** about customers is the thing. Guitar center is a walmart of guitars, when something happens most employees have the f it mentality. Losing a customer doesnt effect anyone directly in a industry like that. Now if this was a local music store, they would be treating you alot different. If it was a local store I would treat them different to , i wouldnt beat them up on a misadvertised price because more then likely if they couldnt go that low they would say sorry that was a error but i can make you this deal , GC just passes the buck. Some lady hung up on me when i was ordering it.

No idea if i will get it , my order wasnt canceled if it is i will just call them up when there in stock and ask where my 453$ p bass is.

All that said I have a friend who works at guitar canter , great guy and i may start part time there as my job maybe ending soon , at another guitar shop

nut width- I've no idea- but it's certainly no jazz neck. Looking at the original image now, I would say that mine is a different model. It's a fender Japan 70s reissue. As far as I know Fender Japan operates fairly independently of Fender in the states, has higher QC standards and has been churning out rough diamonds, under the radar for eons.

they are indeed independent - Fender USA has a vote on the board but so do the two Japanese partners

the QC difference really hasn't been true is sometime when one looks at the last two generations of US stuff - very consistent and on par. I wouldn't really say under the radar either as late 90s until mid/late 2000s CIJ was all the rage on ebay and what not...you know guitargai and the like. Great feeling necks....

So the only thing they "offered" me in the email for my troubles is a chance to buy a Fender Pbass standard (MIM) for regular GC price. Wow. I haven't called them yet today, but I'm going to do so before the day is out and see if I can't at least get a gift card or a credit toward some purchase or something. After all, there is still the little matter of the $564 charge pending on my credit card!
So let me get this straight-- They went through all the trouble to put this thing into their system, and on their website, just to say they aren't going to stock it? I imagine they will try to make all of us who ordered it at the low price go away, then 6mos. from now we'll see it on the site at the sale price it should have be sold at of $849. What a crappy way to do business...

Kinda makes me not even want to buy from MF anymore as they are affiliated. and I've never had anything but excellent service from MF. :/

I'm interested to see if anyone gets any of these 70's P-basses for the "advertised price".

As someone who bought one of these a few months ago, at the regular price; I was a bit annoyed to see the price drop so quickly. But I guess they "accidently" made a huge mistake with the price and then realized their screw up. So now their backpeddling and side-stepping in an attempt to wiggle out it.

But I do hope you guys get it at the price they advertised.

It utter nonsese that they advertise a price like that, take the order, initiate payment by grabbing the money and putting into a payment pending status and then try to redirect customers to another bass.

The cynical part of me thinks .......Classic Bait and Switch.

I ordered a sunburst Fender 70s precision the first day the ad from GC went out. I could not believe the price. I got the $75 discount also but the person on the phone had to get permission from their supervisor for it. They said that the bass would get to me in 5-7 business days but it showed up 4 days later. Then I noticed that GC took the add off the internet and then the official fender site removed the bass from their roster. Wonder what happened. Maybe with the new blacktop basses and the modern player line it was just too much for the economy to support and they cut the production line. It still does not explain how GC sold it for such a low price instead of the $849. They must have been trying to bring in business or made a clerical mistake with the price. By the way- the neck is 1.625 inches versus the jazz 1.5 and the original precision of 1.75. Great bass but I do not have a MIA to compare it to.

I have this 70's P-bass and a 2011 Fender American Standard P-bass.

Both are wonderful basses. There are similarities. The neck's pretty much identical in dimensions and playability.

The body of the 70's P-bass is a wee-bit lighter, but not a huge difference.

The pickups in the 70's p-bass are different. They deliver a different presentation.
