Fender American Design Experience

I'm seeing some very beautiful basses folks. I'm particularly happy for the "lefties" who have had few choices for so long.

I always wanted a Rickenbacker 4003 and was disappointed by not being able to get one with a maple board. I ordered a 4003W this past week, so I'll finally have my maple board Ric. It's a big deal to be able to finally get what you want.

I see the American Design Experience as a very cool thing. I will end up ordering one of these.

No, they can't. But what I had my dealer do was contact Fender & ask them if the ADE could be ordered in Canada. And, he said it can.

Oh, OK... the FAQ on their site still says the following, but maybe they haven't updated the site yet... ?

So, I got the Pure Vintage '63 pickups on mine. They are much higher output than the Fender Original '62 that I have on my other P-bass. I realll like them. Yesterday was the first time I got to switch between basses with the band. Big difference. The new bass really punches through in a way that the old bass doesn't.

Has anyone tried the Pure Vintage '58 yet? It would be very interesting to do a pickup shootout.

I got them on mine and I'm not impressed, unfortunately.

Like your '62, it is VERY high output. And it's a little thin in the bottom, but the midrange is nice. Maybe that's typical '58 tone... I dunno... but I want to put something else in it that has a thicker bottom and a sweeter high end.

The worst part about them is the staggered pole-pieces. The A-string pole pieces stick out of the pickup and I'm beginning to wonder if mine weren't done right because they come WAY out.

Here's a pic...

You can even see in the pic that I have the A side of the pickup lower than the E side and the A string is still way too loud... in order to balance them even more, I'd have to drive the A side in even further and that would be just silly. So I'm going to get a new pickup from Fender and put it in myself.

I don't mean to freak anyone out... my pickup just seems like it's defective. I really hope they're not all like that.

Awesome! When did you place your second order?

My order was placed 5/4 so I'm only halfway through the 3-month window. Just antsy, I guess.
April 17th... so exactly 2 months ago yesterday.

Seems like they're speeding up a little bit.

:)

The 58's are supposed to have the A poles extended. As far as "thin bottom end", my band mates most frequent comment related to the massive low end of my AV 58 when I had it. Have you had a chance to check the guts of your circuit? IME, the 58 always worked best with a .1 capacitor, as far as copping a true "vintage" tone goes. If you have a .047 cap in there, you may try swapping for a .1 cap.

Yes, as I explained in my post, I'm aware that they're supposed to be staggered, but the pole pieces on mine stick out ridiculously far. I have the A string side much lower than the E side and the A buries the E volume-wise.

As far as the cap goes, it doesn't matter what the value is when it's wide open. The cap value is irrelevant when your tone is all the way up. I'll roll the tone off a little bit when appropriate, but I need some bottom end without it and it's not really there.

The bass came with a .1, but I'm so used to having a .047 that I found the .1 unwieldy. I had to swap out the electronics anyway because of a bad pot, so I put a .047 in there.
