Actually, the quote you are referring too probably was in reference to playing bass itself. When off the road, the bass went into the closet, not to be touched until the next album/tour. He has always considered himself a guitarist first, but was relegated to bass in GnR because Izzy and Slash were already there, and better than him.

Now, having heard his solo album, where he played guitar, I have to fully disagree with him. His guitar playing/writing is mediocre at best. There isn't a single moment on that album that even remotely touches the brilliance of his intro on Sweet Child, let alone the rest of the song or album. That is a man that was meant to play bass, whether he likes it or not.

Someone mentioned that the J pup is not placed in the same place as the original, and they are correct. The original MIJ Jazz Bass Special's J is even 1/4" closer to the bridge than a true 70's Jazz bass. Without measuring, just by looking, and assuming they are using the current J spacing standard, then I'd say they are are about 3/4" off on that PUP.

Also, the original 80's Jazz Bass Specials are made of Basswood (someone mentioned that here too), which sound great unplugged, have a very "bouncy" feel when digging in hard, but may come across a little weak in a live setting (basing this off mine with stock pups).

I like the fact that they are using Alder in the new ones, which may make the bass feel a little "better" as some of the original basswood ones are a little on the light side.

I've had a few of the originals (still have a beat-up pewter one), and they are nice basses - the black neck... I liked it at first, now not so much...

The toggle is a PU selector, like on a Les Paul g****r(at least on the original Jazz Specials). The wiring on these basses was a bit unique- read some reviews of the TBX tone control; it's not a simple treble roll-off pot.
As for sounding like a Precision, I'd say yeah, kind of...

the only thing active on that bass has gotta be that tbx control. i read an interview where duff swore off active basses when his electronics crapped out on him in the middle of a show way back in the day. so passive p/ups with an active tone control seems to be the case here. i also thought he used dimarzios but im prolly wrong on that one.

ill bet you can get duff's tone from 'appetite' with a bass boost and more of a 'use your illusion' tone with extra treble boost on the tbx. although im not sure what duff used in the recording of appetite it is very bassy and thick.

if i didnt already have a bass I modded myself in the image of duff's i'd be very tempted to get one of these, but then again im a one bass kind of guy.

Also, to my wanting the real P bass TONE---someone said kinda. I need a tone control that can roll off TREBLE. I want warm, fat and punchy. As stated, I LOVE the look.

Has anyone played one yet?
