I thought his basslines were very tasteful in Guns and Roses - simple, melodic and powerful...and his tone always completely rocked...it was very woody and still very crisp on the top-end.

Well....this is such a subjective issue. I guess I'm a 'serve the song' kind of bassist. And the truth is that I always (and still do) detest GNR. Simplistic c*ck-rock - to ME. So the bass work always struck me as...well, simplistic. Did it work? They certainly sold a lot of records, but that's hardly relevant to the issue. (Hannah Montana tickets come to mind.)

I should also say that I always like those original MIJ Jazz Specials and whatever else they called them back then. Bob Nyswonger plays them (Bears, Dots, other good bands) and he makes them sound great.

I think I was too old to get GNR. Too much Todd Rundgren or something when I was a teenager.

And you think Mark Hoppus really deserved a sig bass and none for Duff?

I wouldn't know Mark Hoppus if he bit me on the ankle.

I can listen to Duff Mckagan's basslines over a a "better" player's any day, such as Victor Wooten(nothing against the fellow)

I hear ya, and much of it is...I like "Appetite", but I can definately hear the "80's" in a bad way in some of the more unpopular songs on that album.

I think that anyone around when "Appitite" was released and G'nR hit the big time must realize how far from "c*ck rock" or hair metal they were. Sure it may sound a little dated now, but back they it was substantial in wiping the "Danger Dangers", "Steelhearts", "Trixters" and other bands truly deserving of the terms above off the face of their record contracts... for good reason. They were a ROCK BAND awash in a sea of Aqua-Netted hair, and were "more Aerosmith" than Aerosmith was back then. ("Angel"?)

...and +whatever to Duff's ability to play for the songs. He's one of the few "guitarists turned bass player" that has played some memerable lines a *decade* later - the intro to "Sweet Child 'o Mine", anyone?

No, I brought up Hanna Montana because ticket prices and popularity can't possibly have anything to do with actual musical talent. I used her to make my point about GNR. Which is, again, JUST MY OPINION, and I don't expect or need everyone to come zooming over to my point of view.

Honestly, I think it's a combination of both - you yourself said you went through all your rock posturing long ago, so I'm thinking by the time they hit you had done so. But what I said in my post is absolutely true: if you (the Global "You") were around and listening in the day G'nR truly was instrumental in kicking the real "C*ck Rock" off of MTV, radio, etc. As I said before, they were much more raw and "real" than all the other hair-metal bands combined.

Penny, I think you and Jack are similar except two different sides of a coin - G'nR has done absolutely nothing of worth pretty much in your entire lifetime, so I imagine it much be hard to think of them as a relevant force in music and simply consider all of Alx's shenanigans, the continued delays, concert cancellations, and changes in band line-ups. But for that first album, they were a force to be reckoned with, especially compared to their peers.

...also, both of you have had to live with their singles being played ad nausium on AOR radio, which even I'll admit gets tiresome. But back in '87 it was like a fresh punch to the face after years of stale, sickly-sweet decaying flowers (Bon Jovi, Ratt, Poison, etc...)

I can tell you dont like GNR but that doesnt mean they were as you said B***s**t, i beleive that is actually against the rules saying that one thing is worse than another, its all personal preference.

If you would like to express an opinion on a band or absolutely anything please dont just say it that way, instead its much easier for other people and alot nicer to use constructive critisicm.

I agree about NOT seeing this guy having a Sig model. Fender should find Mel Schacher from the new and fake GFR (that's Grand Funk Railroad to you youngsters), and make a Sig Jazz bass for him. THAT guy is a good bass player, very underrated, yet considered by many the best musician in the band. His modded up Jazz bass was the BIGGEST fattest sound ever recorded in the late '60s early 70s. Just listen to the "RED" album. The God of Thunder. Also it is still the loudest sound I EVER heard---deaf for a day after Shea Stadium, 7/9/71.

The jazz special is an AWSOME bass!, no other bass had that unplugged acoustic resonance that mine did, however fender is about 12 years TOO late on making a Duff sig bass, and Fender needs to get back in thier DeLorean and rethink things.

The jazz bass specials are still very very reasonable in price and still easily found.
so does it really make any sense to reissue it?

Not to mention the styling is getting a bit dated and I know of not one person who listens to Velvet revolver?

if it was 1993 great! reissue his black one with social D sticker, the famous pearl white one with Skull sticker, maybe give it some fancy pups,

and throw a set of those long now dicontinued rotosound black spacer strings with the multi colored neon silks.. I never could find 1 set of those when i was a kid!, they ran those ads over and over, no one ever stocked them and got discontinued...

then they would have moved tons of them!

i see the real deal (80s model pj special) now and then used, i've been tempted on several ocassions.
i had the 80s MIJ p bass black, no pickguard, on black neck on black headstock and hardware and it was very cool.

a starcaster bodied bass with darkstars.
and the p-bass elite II (two p pickups) this is bass 100% needs to be reissued/redone.

Ok umm to those of you "hating" (as some say) on Duff's bass playing have you ever listened to a Appetite for Destruction? and have you ever heard Lies, or other recordings of G N' R? Apparently you have not and apparently you have listened to the GROOVE in Duff's playing. I can understand if you guys are not a fan of Velvet Revelover, I myself like them but being that I grew up with STP and am heavily influenced by G N' R, to me they just don't compare...they are their own band and I accept that-they have their own sound. There are some that you hear and you just know it's them...one of those is Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, James Jamerson, Jaco, and just like these guys have their own style and tone and stand out..Duff has his own sound and you can hear the influence of Paul's bass playing (from the Clash) he's an amazing rock bassist.

I love that tone, Punch of the P with the growl of a J, everything I want from a bass...anyways

The bass that Fender is issuing I agree with what has been said here in that it is not a sexy bass, it's not all that great looking...I would prefer a pickguard or something but w/e...if I had money to spend I would get it for the pure tone. So if your going to bash the looks, that's one thing but if you are going to bash one of the best bassist (esp rock bassist) from the 80s,90s and 2000s I'm going to disagree with you.

And yes he does DESERVE a signature, I prefer a pickguard, but what's the point of a signature if it's not exactly what the artist used?

+1000. My high school had one of those in a really great color of grey. I cut my teeth on that bass, I've always wanted one exactly like it for myself, but never even seen another like it since. Not for sale, not anything. Never seen another, period.
