Fender CS LOTTO Telecaster Bass

I've owned 6 early Laklands (still have one), about 10 Stingrays and a handful of Sterlings (don't need those MMs now, got a Bongo), and I've had I don't know how many J and P basses both Fender and DIYs (still got a bunch of those). I've gigged and done some recording with them all for years and done the comparisions and that experience tells me that early Laklands are actually not very much like Fenders or Stingrays in feel, sound, or playability. The Laklands stand alone - in a good way.

Like I said before the bolt-on neck and pickup routing are about where the similarities end.

And sneha1965 don't waste your time sending me another scolding PM. They'll just get deleted immediately, unread.

Actually, it wasn't a scolding PM, but a PM so no dirty laundry would have to be aired in public. Why all the hostility and why get personal? The comparisons I made between the Lakand 44-94, Stingray and Jazz where about body shape only are these are documented in several areas on the web which is where I got my information. So if I have something wrong, other's are probably getting it wrong too. If you have some information contrary there's a great opportunity to share instead of getting anger. This site is about having fun and passing along information not taking pot shots at people for their lack of experience. The IM I sent was an attempt to bury the hatchet. It's too bad you didn't read it.

Ok, so if I'm going to build this puppy, the best option for pickups would be the Fender TEB101B pups that were installed in the Squier VM tele bass. These are supposedly designed by Fender for Squier and have the Fender logo on them.

They look exactly like the pups on the LOTTO bass (and I bet they sound pretty damn close too).

My local guitar shop can get them for $100 each.

$200 for pups is kind of a lot of money. I was kinda hoping for more like $100-$150 total for pups.

I could put something more generic in there. Just about any chrome covered humbucker would achieve the basic look.

Do you all think it's worth it?

This would get you most of the way there. Finished body, neck, and everything but the pickups. I allowed a lot for electronics to cover all the little things + strings. The neck wouldn't have the fancy block inlay or binding at this price, but this should give a good estimate of what it would take to just buy the parts (no labor cost). Prices are direct form Warmoth, so I'm sure you could get some of the hardware cheaper if you shopped around. Just a guesstimate, but let's say you allowed $300 for pickups (!), you would be at $1182, so only a bit over the $1000 budget suggested. This estimate didn't factor in shipping either, but as mentioned, I allowed extra for "misc electronics" and you could get better prices for the bridge, tuners, nut, etc.

Anyway, just having fun crunching some numbers.

Why not buy the VM Tele and ONE pickup? Then you're 90% there. The only "big" problem would be the neck inlays, and paint and laquer seems to work for the Geddy bass. The extra screw holes could be camouflaged with a little touch-up work to the finish, I would think.

I wish I'd never seen this, I think it looks incredible and I'm going to buy tickets for Wednesday and Saturday's lotteries. Actually can't decide whether I prefer this of the Decade, IMO probably the two sexiest basses out there. Ever since I heard of the Skyline version of the Decade coming out I've been contemplating selling one of my Spector Euros to finance one. Having said that, the only bass I want to touch these days is my 80s Japanese Precision so I probably don't need anything like this

You're seriously underestimating my laziness. ;) Seriously, I don't think paint and laquer for the inlays would last (not if I did it anyway). Ditto for painting the body. I'm not a luthier, don't have a workshop or a place to paint at all.

I'm thinking squier body, eden (or SX) neck w/block inlays and a custom cut pickguard (I think I can manage that at least).

The question for me is still pickups. Spend $200 on the Fenders or buy some aftermarket Gibson style humbuckers?

If I can find a decent affordable body, I think I'll splurge for the Fender pups.

When I priced it, I priced it out for the person who doesn't want to bother with finishing or any or that - just assembling. I also pointed out in the other thread that it would be easy, and actually CHEAPER, to use a Allparts block Jazz neck instead of the Warmoth. You could reshape it if desired, and it would save a few $$$.
