Fender decals on not-really-Fender basses

I have two Fender name line products "P" and "J". One American one Mexican both are great. I also have two Squier line products one "J" natural full size and my goto a "P" medium scale MIJ.
Say what you want about owing, but I just beat out two other guys for a spot in a group with my Natural "J" Squier. The sound of the instrument was great but they couldn't keep up with the playing.
I have also been beaten out by a 18 yr old kid with a Squier because he was just fantastic. My American "J" would not have made a difference. He was better for the job and we all knew it. I am very proud of him. His playing is wonderful to here and I have seen him twice.
Buy what you want I'll take the player every time.

They closed the rink down and with it went the fun, people were lost for damn near a decade nobody knew what the hell to do in the nineties at first. It was really quite sad how much we all depended on that place.

I don't remember what skates were cool but we had em, prob the same ones, they were low cut black but by my time your wheel color was anything you could think of as long as it was some form of 80's neon something. :-) I don't remember stripes though, just that they weren't cheap and most kids couldn't get them.

Someone made the argument that because the "Fender" logo on Squires is in smaller letters, that means it's not a Fender. Didn't Fender put a large Fender logo and a small Squire logo on the first Squires from the early 80s? (ETA According to Fender website the Strat below is a mid-90s guitar, not 80s)

My favorite Fender is my Squier Jag. I prefer it with the Squier logo on the matched headstock; I think it looks cool that way and the Squier employees should be proud that they made a bass nicer than some of those wearing the Fender label.

This is sort of the reverse of the subject of this thread, but if Fender would be upset about Fender logos on non-Fender instruments, shouldn't they also be upset with the removal of their logo from a legit Fender product? Hmmm? :D

Believe what you'd like, I'll do the same, everyone will keep doing their decals, and others will keep disagreeing with it.

Can't we all just get along? Sing a song? Does it really matter who's right or wrong? This discussion has gone on too long, everyone should stop, & hit their bong, it's just a bass, makes no difference if it was made by Wayne or Wong, that wasn't racist it just rhymed with my get along song.

Lordy, Lordy!! I didn't realize that you were in Louisville!! We were on tour in 1973 (I think it was) and (believe it or not) played a skating rink in a town called "Okolona" or something like that......worst acoustics in the HISTORY of the world!! Then played the "Toys for Tots" show at Freedom Hall there in Louisville. Seems like we went from one extreme to another - about 1,500 for the rink and nearly 25,000 for the Freedom Hall show!

Damn!!! Small world!! :D

That Strat is an official bonerfied MIM Fender, aka MIM black label Fender.

The only thing "Squier" about it is it's a "Squier Series", NOT a Squier.

There was also a Fender black label "Traditional Series" at the same time, but no "Traditional" logo I'm aware of.

MIA bodies and necks, finished and assembled with cheap parts in Mexico...according to an article.

I've had two black label J's and two P's; very nice necks (for Fender necks) imo.

HAHA! I was 8 then and the Okolona rink was on the other side of town so I doubt I caught your show. Didn't Buddy Holly get his start in a skating rink? I've been to a few shows in Freedom Hall where the acoustics sounded horrible too. One was Bob Dylan in the 80's. Had lousy seats and Bob didn't sound near as good as as when I saw him in the 90's at The Palace...now THAT's an awesome venue!

I had Buster Brown shoes in the 70's though! :D

I was actually planning on putting Fender decals on my squier Ps but just couldn't justify paying someone else to make them... So I designed some myself (not hard to do btw) but never got around to buying the water slide paper... So I stuck some Triumph motorcycle stickers on there (the squier logos were already gone from experimenting with painting and refinishing headstocks) and it kinda became a thing. I bought a new vm squier fretless and put a triumph logo on it. I've got a squier jag guitar coming and it will most likely end up with a triumph logo too. My strat will retain its squier logo though because the natural vintage tint and light relic (through years of use) just look too nice! I don't care that it says squier on it... Interestingly the lefty strat body is actually a Cort!
Now, I am not claiming that I will never put a fender logo on any guitar in the future, in fact I have plans to do exactly that, but they will be stickers not decals and inaccurate logos at that done for my own edification. My disclaimer being that these instruments will not be sold in my lifetime (as they are my own pet projects and worth virtually nothing in actual dollars) my wife is the sentimental type so it's down to my kids. My boys are 3 and 6 so we've got a few years to go before they are old enough to consider putting the old man's beater axes back into circulation, and I'm doing my best to raise them to be the kind of guys that wouldn't rip off or defraud anyone (more likely they will chop them up and use them for their own projects). So with all that being said if 40 years from now one of you comes across a badly beaten butterscotch tele with this on the headstock

I could give a rat's ass as to what an owner puts on the headstock of his/her instrument. BUT, ONLY UNDER ONE CONDITION:
That they not pass it off as something it's actually not to a prospective buyer. I friggin' HATE dishonesty with a purple passion. People may say I'm a prick. But, you know what? I'll never, EVER be accused of mincing my words when I speak my opinion. Don't like it? Then don't ask. Period.
Sure, I've had some cotton asses that whined about it along the way, but it pays in the long run for some damn reason. I've had $@#!*loads of people state their opinion that I'm a prick, only to come back over time to thank me for it. Huh, go figure!
I've actually shook a person's hand before, for being straight-up, hurt-my-feelings-honest to me before. But, I picked my lip up and as I said, shook the man's hand for his EXTREME candor.

Sorry for the rant. Bottom line: Don't falsely advertise the instrument.

Just asked a law student friend out of interest since he was online. He doesn't think that someone changing a decal would have any legal responsibility for someone trying to pass it off as something else in the future as long as they specified that it was actually a Squier when selling it themselves. And really if there were, where would it stop? Could you be sued in fifty years time for some random person selling it on as a Fender? :p

I'm completely comfortable with just using my eyes and looking right on the headstock where it says BY FENDER.

If you'd like to share a link feel free but I have no plans on going on some wild goose chase to prove a pointless point.

So my first bass I bought since being "back to" bass as a grownup is one I bought on eBay. It said "modified Squier/Fender Jazz bass." The guy took a Squier Jazz bass, and bought an "authorized by Fender" maple neck, and put a decal on it. He installed EMG Select pickups, and a Badass II bridge.

What IS this bass?

For me, it's a Fender Jazz bass. I wouldn't try to sell it as such, but I definitely play it as such. Here are some other hints for you: my beard is really grey, but there's HAIR DYE in there. Those boots add 3/4 of an inch to my height. The lightning bolt on the strap is just a PICTURE of a lightning bolt, and NOT an actual lightning bolt. If it WERE an actual lightning bolt, I would probably get injured.

And, I am WAY too far away from the receiver for any sound to come out. I am NOT playing in this photo. I am just POSING.

Must be a poseur.
