Fender Fullerton Reissue club

It looks like the body has the "router bump" in the lower cutaway, if the back body contour is extra large, that's a great sign. With the neck removed, you can do a nitro test by rubbing the inside of the neck pocket with a bit of lacquer thinner on rag. Yea, neck stamp is weird- how does it play?

Yep, the router bump is there. The serial number checks to 82. Pot codes do too. Even the grey bottom pickups do too. The neck feels right, and the fretwork is correct, the tuners even seem to check out as far as I know...

It's just that super weird neck stamp!
So odd... Would someone seriously go to this length to fabricate a Fullerton era neck?

Here's a pic of my '84 '57 RI pbass. I'm the 2nd owner and have had her about 8 years now. Prior owner had it 1 year- it sat in the storeroom of a mom n' pop music shop almost 20 years! I didn't really believe the story until I contacted the shop and they confirmed the story. Still has the original flats on it.

Hey Everyone,

Just want to show you that Stamp Dated Necks for Fullerton Reissues do exist!
They are very rare,

but here's another example of one on ebay right now:
1st Year 1982 Fender Fullerton 62 Precision Bass Reissue Custom Color | eBay

I'm pretty excited that I can rest easy knowing my fullerton is legit.

Ok, here's the "Fullerton" I just picked up. But upon closer inspection, I'm uncertain of it's legitimacy...

Any experts out there?

What's with weird ink stamped date on the neck?

Everything else, including the pot codes, and grey bottom pickups seem to check out...

I'm puzzled about this one...

Bump, I have to add photos tomorrow because I bought a black '57 reissue, the body looks to be dated to 1983, the neck 4-25-1984 and it has a V serial number as V011XXX, i thought it was a newer 90s reissue and paid according. It has a lot of wear and I bought it in non working condition, its missing knobs and one pot dates to 1995, wiring has been messed with and the pickups are not gray bottom there just black. I am starting to think this maybe a fullerton with replaced electronics. I have never seen a fullerton with how the neck is done, there is no ink stamp, looks like a pencil wrote Torres not stamp and the body has a little stick shape square in the pocket where is is stamped. If this is indeed a Fullerton I need to figure out if the pickups are original, because then id have new pots installed since the shafts are busted but its its all unoriginal electronics I will just order a new harness and maybe a lollar pickup.

So a guy lists a cab on craigslist yesterday and he says you can have this Fender bass if you buy it. Not needing the cab I asked can I just buy the bass? The terrible photos made me think its a beat up Japan model. He urges me that the bass is a total piece of crap, he says its missing the knobs, its dirty, lots of finish wear, the pots are broken as the shafts have been broke off, there is gaffers tape on it, some stickers, 3 rusty strings, a case missing a latch and labeled Yamaha. I still was thinking okay its a Japanese Fender, the body is still worth it to me as is the hardware. He says there is no markings on the Neck so I thought maybe a parts bass. I drove 30 miles to his house and looked at it. Very light and frankly I have saved worse. I noticed a V serial neckplate and having owned '57 Reissues from the 90s and 2000's I thought this could be a maybe last 15-20 years reissue. Whatever the case I bought it. The guy even urged me not to, saying he had some peaveys and other stuff.

I drove home and as soon as I took the guard off and saw there wasnt routing between the pickup and control cavity I was stoked knowing this is a '57 reissue of either American or Japan Origin. I then pulled the neck, it was easy to read 4-25-XX. I had to take a exacto knife and slowly remove the rest of the black Finish to see a 84, so 4-25-1984. I said no way could this be a "fullerton reissue". I then looked at the paint ink date, super hard to see. I had to wet it down to see what clearly looks to be 1983, Its very hard to see I need a magnify glass as I guess my eyes arent that great but it looks like Aug 6 1983 and the 8 is very definite. I started getting pretty stoked that I may have what looks to be a fullerton. At this point I 100% knew this was a Fender '57 Reissue USA P bass, it has all the features, gold guard, threaded bridge, reverse tuners, a hole for a hootenanny button, 1 3/4 neck, pencil dated neck, vintage frets, truss rod heel adjustedment, the no channel routing, the V serial, the router hump, 10 pickguard holes under guard, pickup, bridge covers etc. It was definitive at that point I had some Fender USA '57 Reissue.

I then took to looking up the serial number V011X, that put it in Fullerton range. All these things stated I think without a doubt this is a mid 1984 Fullerton P bass. I am unsure when they stopped making Fullertons so this could maybe be one of the last Fullerton reissues? I have looked at many, many photos and I cant find any with a neck date this late, there all penciled 1982 and 1983 from what I found and only found 1 other one in black which was a custom color?

My only doubts stem from its logo and string tree, either its logo is in a different position then the majority of Fullertons or the string tree is. Take a look. Additionally my neck has no inspection type stamps or ink stamps but it does appear to say TORRES in cursive in pencil it has some signature. Also remember the pots I said were broken? I removed them, they had a blue cap but cloth wiring and CTS, the pickups though have no marks, black bobbins and plastic wiring.

I took the bass apart, did all this documentation. Cleaned it for hours on end, making sure that the tape I removed didnt remove finish. After all that I took a wiring harness out of a 80's Japan Fender I am parting out and I wired it to the basses pickups. All worked. I then put it all back together and used the 2 knobs from that same Japan Fender which is also a 1984, the knobs may actually be what Fullertons used as well, they have bubbling to the chrome and weigh 16 grams, a newer American standard knob weighs 36 grams. They look great and match the rest of the bass perfect. To finish it off I put pyramid flats on it and I barely gave the neck a turn of the truss.

Hands down, best Precision I have ever played. A smooth broke in neck thats super thin, I couldnt believe how great the bass played. It must be dried out or what because it is so resonant its crazy. I do believe its all Fullerton but the pots, knobs and the pickup may or may not be.

What say you? is this indeed a fullerton? The logo or string tree position is what makes me hesitant to hands down say I own a fullerton. Does anyone have a later date on a neck then 4-25-1984? If so do you have black bobbin pickups? I am guess the pickups cant be original.

Sorry for grammar errors I am on the train-

Man I have some questions for you since my '57 is date 1984 as well. It looks like our logo's and string tree's are in the same positions which seems different to the 1982 and 1983 models I have seen.

Do you know the pencil date on your neck? Also do you know what the bottom of your pickups look like and if there cloth or plastic wires? While I think my pickup is unoriginal as I have only heard of black bottom pickups on the fullerton guitars I am wondering that if at some point in 1984 as they were closing the plant and had some basses to finish they threw whatever pickup they had in.

It's been found that early Fullertons had the headstock decals in the 'wrong place' it wasn't until sometime in '83 they ironed out all the kinks. It's interesting that the neck pocket has that masked off rectangular area - probable refin? -have you done a nitro test to the body?

@A-Step-Towards , They made the AVRI models in Fullerton up until 1985, so an '84 neck date is normal. Fullertons are also known to have black, green, and even (rare) red bobbin pickups, so those are likely original too (they should have the copper-colored Formvar windings if they are original though). The decal placement looks fine to me (there is some variance since the decals were applied by hand).. but if it were late '80s Corona-made, the decals were usually placed way to the left (towards the nut) in that era. The tree is pretty far towards the ball end of the headstock, but it was obviously not moved becasue there is no hole where it would be more commonly found. So all those things about your bass are consistent with a Fullerton IMO, including the V01XXXX ser. #.

I agree with 7dollarbologna that it was probably refinished. I have never seen a neck pocket with the masked off area like that on any factory finish from any era.. it's too small to be the normal factory "paint stick mark". Looks like someone refinned it and at least had the good idea to preserve the date stamp. Cool find man!

Couple of things: I have never seen a plastic wire pickup on a Fullerton P except the first few months in late 82. It should have a green bottom cloth wire pickup with raised "A" string pole pieces. Definitely a refin -- you can see paint in some of the holes, and the router hump has been sanded down. Also, I have never seen a Fullerton era Precision decal/string tree in that location. Pots and cap are clearly replacements.

To wrap up some statements the decal and string tree is in the exact location of the other 1984 White 57 reissue on this page. I am pretty sure the pickups arent original, I know there not correct for the majority of fullertons but I was thinking maybe late in 1984 they may have switched to a type with plastic wiring, anyways the pole piece isnt raised etc, likely not original.

I have to disagree about it being a refinish based on what I have found. I have looked at so many fullerton photos recently, some of the neck pockets have stamps, some paper serial numbers, some no paint, some with paint etc. The pickguard screw holes do not have paint in them, the bridge cover holes do but I found a black fullerton J like that as well. Additionally the router hump is very pronounced so I dont believe it to be shaved down. Furthermore the case had a band name on it, I found that band on youtube. This bass was being played in that video and is in various photos, showing the same wear patterns and finish loss on the body in 2001, kinda hard for me to believe that from 1984-2001 it wore through 1 paint job, was repainted as well as it is and then picked up that much wear. Since black was such a rare color I cant find another black '57 to compare it to. I really dont care either way, doesnt make a difference from what I paid but just want to represent it correct when I post it.

Anyways thanks for the replies, its a great bass. I have been piecing together info as I will be selling it, P basses just arent my thing without a Jazz pickup.

The weight of it is amazing

I have owned 4 Fullerton RIs (all original) and from those photos I believe that is indeed a refinish. Main reason being the quality of the paintwork itself. this one looks too rough, but the RIs finish was very smooth. Great weight!

The roughness you are seeing is all the dings, its dented and worn and chipped all over plus all the stickers that were on it 15+ years, I have yet to see a Fullerton as worn as this one. Its a very worn finish. What has not been beat on is very smooth. Where the guard was its glassy underneath but any area thats not been covered its beat on.

Here are photos of it now and with the previous owner in 2001, had the stickers on it when I got it. You can see above the E string and guard some missing finish and its in the photo with her by the blue circle.

I am going to contact the previous owner but based on the wear I can see it already had in 2001 I do think its original paint, it would be a custom color finish so I wouldnt expect the neck pocket to look like a 1982 sunburst model. I can already tell Fullertons were all over the map how they were made judging by how different my logo and the '57 in white on this pages logo are, mine and his are identical placement.

I just like finding out the history on my gear its fun

What do you mean by the router bump in the lower cut away. I have heard this mentioned before just not sure what this area looks like or what specifically you're referring to.
