Got it, thanks for clarifying! Is that characteristic more common to see on the Fullerton era bases than it is on more recent Fender reissues?
Its period correct for the basses there replicating, 50's and 60's Fenders had very noticeable humps from the tooling they were made on. I am selling a 2000 '57 Reissue, the Hump above is from a Fullerton, the newer one is a Corona but both USA reissues of a '57 and both finished in black but the Fullerton has a way more pronounced hump. Lots of Japan Fenders have those humps. They could be made without them its all for replication purposes now.
Check out the black P-Bass above, there's a shot of the back of it - look at the bottom,left neck screw - then look to the left of that, in the cutaway you will see a 'hump' rather than a clean curve. All Fullerton bodies have this.
Please let me know if there's any Fullerton RI of '62 Jazz bass available!
My grandfather's 70's birthday is in December, and I would love to purchase one for him!

I did recently notice that one. But my birth year is 82, so my Fullerton must be also.

I am the one who bought the black 57 reissue from A-Step-Towards (he posted a lot of images a couple of posts back). Just to let everyone know - my tech removed the paint in the neck pocket and there is a stamp indicating the year 1983. Plus on the neck heel, the year 1984 is much clearer than in the photos. So to conclude, it is in fact a Fullerton reissue. We could not establish what is the situation with the body paint, I think it is probably refined (or at least over-sprayed), but I have a feeling the original factory color was also black.
I love this bass, it compliments my 1984 fullerton reissue (62) perfectly. one for rounds and one for flats, both made in my year of birth

This is my 1982 (body date Dec 23, 1982) Fender '62 AVRI. The story on this one is my guitar player moved a tenant's bed and off in the corner is a bass case. My guitar player asks about the case and the bed owner states "that's my boyfriend's old bass. He used to jam with Santana actually. For moving this bed you can take it if you'd like" - which my guitar player did.
He hits me up to look at a bass but isn't specific. He hits me up a second time and I ask what kind it is, he tells me "Fender", I ask if it's American made and indeed it is (well now I'm interested!!!!). We go to his place to grab it and he tells me "this is TRASHED and if it's wasted I'll just be throwing it away". So I look at it and it's got twenty or more years of dust, plus someone had spilled a beer or soda on it! ***??? I spend the day cleaning it up, throw some new strings on it and start researching. I found out that it was an AVRI so researched the pricing. I figured to sell, probably worth $1200 to $1400 ( I didn't know the Fullerton story at this time ). I called my local dealer and he states that he buys them for about $900 and sells for right about what I figured. I called my guitar player and told him "if you want to hold out a minute, $900, or sell it real quick at $600". He says "I'll sell it to you for $600". I always wanted a nice Jazz so I was very interested. I posted a picture of it on a FB bass site and a couple peeps told me to "Buy it NOW - don't let it slip through your fingers", ..... so I did.
Shortly thereafter I had a heart attack and stopped thinking about bass for a minute, but when I did I took it to a local setup guy and had him work on it, where he provided me the dates. I couldn't believe it when I heard it!!! I'm like "1982? Are you sure???" - he didn't know why this was so important.
Somewhere along the line someone installed a Badass II, which probably deducts from it's actual worth, but I'll tell you what, it plays and sounds like a dream!!! I'm used to active pickups so I have to turn it up a little more, but when I do, the sound..... soooooooo nice.
An American made Jazz, a Ged Lee for example, has always been a "bucket list" type of gear for me - scoring a '62 Fullerton for $600???? Beyond my wildest dreams!!!!

I'm joining the Fullerton Reissue Club... I just bought GregC's '83 AVS '57 P with '62 vintage pickups.

I looked for months for the perfect Fullerton p bass.
I passed on a few that were not up to what I wanted...but will get one some day.
Here's what I did get.
Custom shop limited edition 60th anniversary 58 p bass tribute closet classic....but not just one of the 15 made.
I got the one in the flyer and sold at namm....I mean come on I had to buy it.
But as soon as mama stops kicking me the hunt for my Fullerton will continue.

....I bought the '83 Fullerton '57 tobacco burst P pictured a couple of post back. It got stuck in the snow storm back in Chi town, so I won't be getting it until the end of the week. It's a resonant sub 8 lbs bass with a '62 Fullerton P pickup that apparently came that way from the factory.
