Just found this ‘83 avri 62 J at a GC out in Ca. Photos looked pretty solid so Im having it shipped over here to the EC to have a luthier check it out. Apparently GC’s “vintage” folks pull neck and pots to check dates before they call it “vintage” though im not sure I really trust their vetting process. Thry told me case was OG too, though its pretty beat and sharpie’d on, sadly. Looks like the bass needs a good cleaning, strings, and setup but im hoping dates check out and electronics work & neck is straight. Pickups look a little clean compared to rest of bass so not sure if they are original. To my surprise, dude said a known player dropped it off a few weeks ago but its been sitting up high on the wall so nobody really knew what it was and it hadnt been looked at by customers much. Whatcha think Fullerton Club? Fingers crossed with this one.

Apparently owner was in death metal band Possessed but i cant find any record of a Tom M playing for them. Just tweeted the singer to try to track down some history on this bass. GC gives me 72hrs to look over the bass before return period ends so Id love to have some history and take it to luthier at the same time for a looksee to make sure bass is legit and in good working order

Nice find! It looks like its legit but id take it apart and check for dates...pots, pickups, neck. In the pickup cavity theres usually some little colored circular inspection stickers. Body should have very deep contours and check for the routers hump. Case should have the duck tab. Peperoni guard looks good. Necks usually have a very thin profile. On the surface everything looks right on. Congrats & Good luck!

Had the crazy idea of having the burst 62ri jazz coming to me refinished in lake placid blue. Is this crazytalk? The post in this thread of the LPB jazz with the pep guard looks pretty amazing and pretty unique.

Looks good but it will probably hurt the resale value should you decide to let it go in the future. But if it is a keeper and you like it in LPB, go for it!

Picked up my 83 62j today! OG case is beat to hell, but bass is in good shape minus 30 years of sweat, tarnish, and gunk on it (mojo?). No chips, heavy wear, or buckle rash and only a few minor impressions here and there. Some nice checking on front and rear but no cracks thru the finish. Fretboard is pretty grimey and frets need a dressing (addressing ha) but neck has a nice deep tint and gloss. Pots are pretty sticky as vol & tone dont turn separately with one hand, but no crackling. Took it apart to find mid-July ‘82 pots and a 9-2-83 neck. No markings in neck slot on body. Didnt pull pups for bobbin color but am taking to Wooden Wizard in NoVa in the morning for a deep clean, go-over, and setup.

Took the 83 J to Larry at Wooden Wizard in NoVa today for a refurbish & setup. Cant speak highly enough about his work. Dude has had Custom Shop MC certificate from Fender since the 80s and for good reason. He knows his stuff and is a master luthier. The projects going on in his shop dropped my jaw. Everything from killer refins to hand shaped eucalyptus bodies to hand carved gorgeous abalone inlays. Unreal craftsmanship. My AVRI 62 looks like a brand new instrument. Cleaned, oiled, buffed, de-oxed to perfection and set up perfectly. Completely broke the bass down, Unstuck the stacked knobs so they function independently as new, slaked the thirst of the beautiful rosewood board after years of grime buildup, polished the neck, headstock, and body with cleaning and polishing compound on a stand buffer apparatus, basically got the bass to as close to brand new as a 35yr old axe could be. So stoked!!! Threw on some chrome flats (for now) and ready to roll! I now see why people are so stoked on these Fullerton RIs. This thing has more soul in its lower horn than any of my modern era US Fenders whole body

So damn thrilled on this bass. Whata gem!

As the years go by, you’ll appreciate the craftsmanship of this bass more and more. She’s a beauty !!
