Fender Jino Jazz Bass!

Hey Guys,I’m really surprised that the news travels really Fast!
It came on sale on the 25th in Japan and here we are...
If You have any Q’s Let me know,
I’ll be Glad to answer Q’s.
Some low down:
The Body and da neck and the pickups are designed by Master Builder Mark Kendrick and everything is made in USA except for da tuning pegs .....and it’s Built in Japan.
Neck pocket is deeper like my 77’s compared to my 60’s Jazz so I was able to achieve Low action and a real comfortable tension and it’s such a ease to play with no hand stress.

I chose Ash because they told me that they were gonna be discontinued
(Pine now)....due to the bugs eating the tree???how insane is that?

I also wanted late 70’s fender jazz vibe (most of them post 75’s were mostly Ash)
And early StingRays were also Ash bodies

So We got da last batch of ash bodies sent from US to japan. And after checking out few of them ,I found out that they all weigh different.Some are light (Swamp Asn :upper part of the tree )And some were heavy (bottom part of the tree)but the ones I played were pretty light compared to the vintage 70’s Ash body jazz basses.
Also you have to take in consideration that this bass has 2single jazz and a Humbucker Pups and on board pre amp and a 9v Battery with high Mass Bridge.

And the neck is a U neck profile so it’s a little bit thicker compared to the Old MIJ C neck so by comparison you’ll notice it right away that the tone, is like day and night.
This Bass really sounds like my vintage 70’s punchy Jazz and 70’s Stingray.

So I thought if I can have the best of the both worlds and have 6 combinations of tones I would never have to bring both Jazz and Stingray to a gig.
I know what you’re thinking :I’m lazy...

1)Front
2)Rear
3)Humbucker
4)Front and Humbucker
5)Rear and Humbucker
6)Front,Rear and Humbucker

I know everyone is concerned about the Sweet spot of MM Hum-bucker PUPs ,
but overall I think We have achieved close enough tone to the 70’s MM Stingray.

Many thanks for the additional info. Looks then it's the luck of the draw in terms of weight, could be light, could be boat anchor. Now I have to wonder on how I'm going to get one of these - and I was looking forward to an AmPro II next year...

Thanks so much for posting this additional information and offering to take questions. Congrats on the signature bass, it looks and sounds great! I'm definitely interested.

I’m really curious to hear the humbucker. I don’t think I’ve owned or played a Fender bass with a Music Man style pickup before.

Thanks for chiming in Jino. I bought my Roland XL120 bass combo mostly based on your promotions/reviews. Your attitude and demeanor just struck a chord for me, playing wasn't too shabby either!
I have never regretted my decision to buy that amp, thanks man.

I’m really curious to hear the humbucker. I don’t think I’ve owned or played a Fender bass with a Music Man style pickup before.

Many of the basses at the store is not set up right, neck is not straight and the bridge was too high And I’m playing the exact same bass.
it Just didn’t feel right or feel like mine .....so I asked a friend and he told me that there’s a hidden rule in Japanese guitar/bass string height at the music stores .
They all follow certain rule where the neck is slightly bowed and string height is measured and set at different heights at different frets. Due to the bass players playing with a pick or fingers,etc.
So when I went yesterday I asked for 2 Allen Wrench :
one for da truss rod and one for a bridge because the way it was set up was not playable for my liking.
So please do the same!

Thanks for the heads up, Jino! Glad I did not have a chance to go yet! I will ask the guys at Grandey Bass in Shibuya when I visit (and if they have one in stock still) if they can adjust the setup for sure. They are really chill so I’m sure they’ll help!

Good news : 1700 USD so I would say price reasonably, cheaper than USA made for probably similar (better?) craftmanship

Bad news : 4.7kg / 10.3lbs...for a 4..that's heavy. I don't even accept that weight for my 5's

I had a chance to try the bass today

I played for maybe about fifteen minutes. The finish looks great in person. The neck shape is very comfortable. The back of the neck was very smooth (I’m not sure how to describe it other than by saying maybe it is an oil finish like a music man?).

The weight did not seem so heavy to me. I did not have the ability to weigh it but if I had to guess maybe it was 8.5-9.5 pound range?

Jino was right about it being super new and requiring a setup. The guys at the shop said they just got it in and adjusted it.

The electronics and pickups were really interesting. I never played a bass with this pickup configuration. I was also surprised by the preamp. I cranked it up and still found it to be clear. The top end was not harsh and the bass did not distort.

It had all the characteristics of a Jazz bass but with a big humbucker smack in the middle. When playing I found myself particularly enjoying the passive humbucker sound.

The one thing I caught on the bass I tried though was the bass and treble knob may need to be adjusted. They were a little stuck together? Other than that everything was great!

the screw just needs to loosen and needs a quick adjustment! Cheers!
