Fender La Cabronita Precision Bass

Just tried a Cabronita for the first time today.

Overall impression? Growly. Sounds great. Neck's thick - almost 70's chunk. Looks country (I tried a burst) Good right-hand feel; would almost want a bridge cover to complete the "retro-feel" but the bridge that's on there looks a lot like a badass I.

Just my $0.02.. I'm sure 90% of y'all probably got much the same experience I did at first, heh.

Am I missing something? I just rechecked the Fender Vintage Modified site, and sure enough, the Squier VM Cabronita Precision bass is ONLY available in BLACK with maple neck and white pickguard. I checked the other "Cabronita" series such as the VM Telecaster six-string Cabronita, and it too was only available in black. $499.99 MSRP.

What gives? Are other countries getting color choices, and those of us in the USA are only getting black? I'm confused.

I don't get a lot of "live action shots" (when you look like me, you avoid such things!), but a friend found this online. From a show in Indonesia last month:

I'm really getting a lot of mileage out this bass already! Really unique, mid-forward rock tones & a lot of fun to play. The deep U-shaped neck (don't believe the Fender website spec, this is no 'C' shaped neck) really is comfortable for a guy with guy with large hands, like myself!

The bass has also needed zero bridge or neck adjustments since I got it from Sweetwater this spring. That's after playing all over the U.S., Canada, Indonesia and Argentina, too! Very stable! I'm using a set of D'Addario EXP coated roundwounds that I put on when I bought the bass & they still sound pretty much brand new. This Cabronita has become my 'no-brainer' reliable rock bass!

There are no other colors for the Squier Cabronitas in other countries either, just black.
The body of my Squier Cabronita bass has a tummy contour, as far as I can see the Fender version doesn't have that. The body wood is the only other difference that I could find, alder for the Fender and basswood for the Squier. The pots and knobs are what you usually find in Indonesian Squiers. Build quality is very good for a bass in this price range, I am very happy with mine.

I have the sunburst Cabronita with black pickguard. I installed a white pickguard on my Cabronita. Makes it look even more "vintage". Thinking of installing a black thumbrest in the old school position under the g strings. any thoughts? Also installed Labella flats on but I feel like I'm losing something sonically. I love the feel of flats so I was thinking either brite flats or made nickel strings. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The 50's position thumbrest (under the G string) is less useful than the 60's (above the E string) position. But, with the 50's position, you would get that black-on-white contrast...

Try a set of D'Addario Chromes. Great flatwound feel, but a little brighter and the Chromes retain some rock 'grind' which this bass does so well!

Thanks for the feedback. I usually rest my thumb on the E string so the thumbrest is just for aesthetics! I had chromes on the Cabronita before and I found them too stiff but then again I had a set of 50-105's. Maybe I'll try the 45-100 set. I love the feel of the Labellas though. I heard TI flats are pretty loose and brighter than usual flats. I might try those but I heard they're quite expensive. BTW great picture of you in action! Also love the video of you playing the Cab. If I ever win the lottery I'm getting that amp!!! Later.
