To be fair, softening the edges of a fretboard is a really easy task, something I've done to all of my basses. Take a screwdriver and rub the fretboard edges with the barrel (not the end, obviously). Instant softer edges.

Fender Player II Series - Rosewood is back!

I always think Black hardware and plastic. It would look incredible with that bass.
This is Sire's gen 2 rolled off fretboard and thank gods Player II series doesn't have this kind of roll-off. I tried a few Sires with these boards and strings can easily just pop off the fretboard. Super, SUPER annoying.
I am waiting for a Mustang like the one you described - classic bridge and rounded pickups, but with a modern truss rod and 9.5" neck with the color selection that the PJs have.
Basically if the 60s Vintera had a modern neck it would be my perfect mustang... I'm unfortunately not a fan of the flashiness of the 70s Vintera or the road worn look of the JMJ.
Me either and I'd like to see them bring back out the big humbucker single pickup.
As for the Ps and Js, I really don't get the lack of choice of fretboard wood / body color combinations, that's an avoidable miss.
So is not (still) not offering a J neck width for Ps.

Yesterday, I was at my local Guitar Center to pick up a shipped, used instrument. They had a Sunburst/Rosewood and a Polar White/Maple Jazz in stock. I only had a couple minutes to give them a quick, unplugged trial. First impression, they looked and felt very nice and were plenty resonant when played acoustically. I wish I had more to report about their sound, but time wasn't on my side.
My Player II J4, with some mods (HS B-bridge, Fralin single coils, Tort guard, Dunlop strap pins, and NYXL (45-100) strings. Black aluminum knobs inbound…

The yellow is exactly the same as buttercream. Fender just renamed it. Come on folks.

Sure, the Hialeah Yellow is nearly identical to the Buttercream, but you have to admit they were using some real creative thinking when they switched from Tidepool to Aquatone Blue.
Less saturated on new yellow.
One has melt butter yellow, and another one just like the butter you take out from fridge....

I also tested an AmPro II and a Vintera 60's there for comparison, but I couldn't convince myself in the least to pay the extra price.
Just put another pickguard on it ......done !

I think it's great what Fender is doing with the Player II series. When I bought my 2014 Am.Std P Bass new one of the features was a rolled edged fingerboard, it's nice that the Mexican made basses get this as standard.
Yesterday I picked up this stylish companion from the local dealer I trust.

Yeah, another nice lloking poor man Pino P .
Squier has one on 2012 China CV60P which has nice roll fret board edge too. Far better build quality compare to all my Player P.

I fell in love with a color: Coral Red. Player Plus II Precision from Sweetwater. It almost glows in real life. Mine is 8.5 pounds. Fit and finish are as good as a Classic Vibe (sorry for the hot take - no offense meant to the Ensanada plant). The rosewood is super dark, but up close, it is kind of funky. Almost no grain/variation. Dry. Almost like like it was stained to get the color. No impact on playability. Love the rolled edges - plays like butter. Pickups are a tad brighter than what I would describe as the classic P-bass tone. Not in a bad way. I prefer TI Jazz Flats so changed strings. 1/4 turn on the truss road and all set to go. The white bass in the photo is a Fender MIJ Hama Okamoto. Also recently purchased. It cost $250 more than the Player Plus II bass. They are close in quality. The MIJ rosewood is gorgeous: dark, veiny, looks oiled although it is not. Pickups are a touch more to my liking than the PPII. I hope this is useful for anyone considering a PPII - especially in Coral Red.

A set of pickups is very easy to replace on those basses so that wouldn't be a concern for me.
The look of that red and black baby is awesome ! I would bring that on stage with no shame at all !
