Thanks - I'm with you on not normally liking a black pickguard on red. But this combo seems to work - has a bit of a 80's/90's post-punk vibe.

Fender Player II Series - Rosewood is back!

The coral red looks great!I fell in love with a color: Coral Red. Player Plus II Precision from Sweetwater. It almost glows in real life. Mine is 8.5 pounds. Fit and finish are as good as a Classic Vibe (sorry for the hot take - no offense meant to the Ensanada plant). The rosewood is super dark, but up close, it is kind of funky. Almost no grain/variation. Dry. Almost like like it was stained to get the color. No impact on playability. Love the rolled edges - plays like butter. Pickups are a tad brighter than what I would describe as the classic P-bass tone. Not in a bad way. I prefer TI Jazz Flats so changed strings. 1/4 turn on the truss road and all set to go. The white bass in the photo is a Fender MIJ Hama Okamoto. Also recently purchased. It cost $250 more than the Player Plus II bass. They are close in quality. The MIJ rosewood is gorgeous: dark, veiny, looks oiled although it is not. Pickups are a touch more to my liking than the PPII. I hope this is useful for anyone considering a PPII - especially in Coral Red.
Not a bass but I did pickup the new Player II Jazzmaster. Added some TI flats and this thing is absolutely FLAWLESS. I highly recommend this line!!! The rosewood is so dark and lush, the bridge and trem is so simple and perfect, the pickups sound absolutely amazing and the entire feel and sound is 10/10.
Some "purists" complain about the JM looking different but I couldn't care less. It actually gives off quite a "vintage" look in person with this color scheme. I absolutely love it.

MIJ or MIM? Are the MIJ's worth the higher cost and hassle to get some of them? I feel like if I got a MIJ, I may be "done". I do worry how the necks on the MIJ' s compare to the Players. I'm happy with the players neck, but never tried a MIJ, so I worry. ?
Are you presenting this as a new question? I have both and can answer.
Before the JM above, I would have said MIJ all day. The past MIM I've owned have been lame. But now I am not so sure. I would rate this MIM Player II JM as good or slightly better quality than my MIJ International Precision or Traditional II Jazz.
You have to see them first though. A place like SW allows you to pick one that looks best and also choose the weight. I would assume that MIM has a more random build quality and MIJ will be more alike with each other.
However, I think the Japanese offerings tend to be more aesthetically pleasing. But they are harder to get and more expensive, yes.

For sure. I think that it is probably worth it to go MIJ if it's easy and already in the US. But I probably wouldn't pay 1500 to import one like I did for my MIJ precision, although I love it.

Hmm..... the Player II cavity cut seem different to PLayer 1, pretty alike the Player Plus PJ body.
And..... no sheilded paint at all !?!?! Cut cost ???
Seem the Player II are Player Plus passive version without active preamp, himass bridge and 12' radius fretboard.

Word from people at Fender is its very likely that we will be getting chamebred player ii basses.
Something I've just noticed is that the big box stores seem to have pulled the original Player Series Jaguar basses from their websites (I only see the Mike Kerr as a Fender offering now). They were also noticeably missing from the original Player II series announcement. I'm going to make an educated guess and say that they're going to announce some new color combos for the Jaguar bass soon?
I was kinda hoping this might happen, too. Might have to buy one if they have any nice looking ones.
I bought one of the Player II Jazz basses in 3 tone sunburst. I love the playability and feel of the neck. I love the look of the rosewood fretboard. All that being said, there were mods. The white pickguard had to go, I put tort on it. I installed some vintage nickel Dunlop Dual Design straploks. The big mod, though, was replacing the pickups with Seymour Duncan Apollo noiseless humbuckers. This bass is a beast now, I'm having so much fun with it.
That is a beauty! Crazy how the tort on the sunburst elevates the look so much compared to a plain black or white pickguard. Probably why they usually save this combo for the MIA.
To me it's just a no brainer. Even black would be better than white. They put a black pickguard on the American Performer Jazz, and with that at least it matches the black at the outer part of the 3TSB, so it does look cool. But white? Yeah, that had to go. I'm sure there are certain colors it would look good with, just not that. Just like tort doesn't go with everything.
