Fender Player Meteora Bass

I predict this will go the way of the Dimension, the Cabronita P, and the Reverse Jaguar. Translation: it doesn’t matter how good or cool it is, it’ll get discontinued because it’s not a P or a J.

And, just like every other non-P or J Fender, all the same people who bagged on them when they were introduced will wax poetic, years later, about how much of a hidden gem they were and it's such a shame they never caught on.

"Look, it's a Modern Player Jazz with a retro-futuristic body shape! BURN THE HERETIC!"

(I like it. I liked it back when Rosser still made Meteora bass bodies. And I'll bet anyone a set of strings that it doesn't neck-dive nearly as badly as a Firebird.)

Yep. I just recently bought a Dimension. I didn’t have the dough back when they were being made, but it’s really great, and a shame they’re discontinued. I also really like the looks of the non-reverse Jag, which pretty much led to me later buying a Thunderbird, and I’ve been shopping for a deal on a used Cabronita for years. I’m one of those people who love it when Fender messes with their own tradition or tries something new.

The traditional Fender headstock doesn't match the shape of the body well. If they wanted to use a house design they could have recycled the Katana/Performer headstock.
Not a fan basically. At least they try new stuff.
I disagree - I think the trad Fender headstock shape is perfect.

It’s very much a mid-century modern-inspired body shape, as is the headstock shape. Combined with active EQ and non traditional Fender pickups, it becomes a modern take on MCM. Just needs more of a 50’s-60’s colour palette, like DuPont colours and transparent finishes, yet modern hardware.

I quite like it in the orange but the battery box really bothers me, looks slapped on with no thought.

Great sea kayak Paddles bass guitar.

The current FMIC R&D team are absolutely lacking talent.

They should make multi scale bass rather than odd bass.

Fender takeoff on a reverse Gibson Thunderbird… But at least they’re finding good use for all those leftover Dimension pickups. :p (IMO it was a crime the way they let the Dimension just wither on the vine. Dimensions are truly great basses. One of the best designs Fender ever came up with.)

Either way, I’d really like to try one out. Looks like a fun bass. My inner headbanger is looking at it with a longing gleam in its eyes.

Count on it.

But why change when offering yesterday’s designs and tech at tomorrow’s prices has worked so well for your business for the last 70 years. :D;)

A Fender that isn't a P or a J. Let's start the pool on when it dies. I give it about a month - I have dibs on April 11th, 2022. The 9 AM hour.

P.S. I'd really like to be wrong - I'd like to see Fender stick it out for a while on a different kind of bass. And yes, splits on the pickups would be a good thing - chosen so that, if you split both, the combination is hum cancelling.

Oh, I forgot - everyone gets one free gripe. It's missing a string.

My minor quibble is how the pickguard extends into the black part of the burst on the lower right bout. It makes the pickguard look too big. Almost like it was cut wrong or meant for something else.

And yeah, as a fiver would have been a better plan purely from a marketing perspective if nothing else. Less pushback from the PB and JB jihadists that way since they’d just ignore it

Just out of curiosity, how so?
Too much distance between that upper horn and the 12th fret (where things would tend to balance better). Neck dive, neck reach, to the 1st fret, a pain in the neck waiting to happen. No functional reason to make it the way it is, just some designer's plaything. "Well isn't that ... stylish ..."

What's up with the flourishes/accents on either side of the headstock logo? Perhaps I'm a shallow person but that would keep me from buying one. Design wise the bass looks like something good for pounding out simple, loud bass lines since your fretting hand will probably be holding the neck up. If I could get rid of the logo accents and put a pearloid pickguard on it I would hang it on my wall though.
