My early '62 P-bass. Body dates 1/62, neck dates 12/61. Pots have been changed. Pickups look original. I bought it off the second owner who's owned it since 1964. It was repainted by the previous owner's drummer one night, because the drummer had a black kit and wanted the bass to match... (I know). Anyways I have a thread with a little more info.

If you’re still handing out numbers, could I grab 667?

Hello All,

I would love to join the club. I have a 63 P-Bass. Refin in Lake Placid Blue, which based on a small bit of paint in the control cavity I believe is the original color. Pots and jack have been replaced, but the pickup, hardware and pickguard are original. The bass sounds just as it should.

Well, I posted by 63 P-bass a while back (see quote). It had a not very nice Lake Placid Blue refinish on it. It felt like a spray can finish and was clearly not very professional. I don't know the original color, but since the pick guard is original (I think) I wanted to go with a color that would go well that that. So I decided to have MJT refinish it as a sonic blue nitro finish with a light relic. It almost looks daphne blue or surf green depending on the light. I think it looks much better!

What do you do when your old pickguard has shrunk, making the screws fit all wonky?

Would it be heresy to plug and re-drill the holes? I would think so.

Yep. Just screw in the best you can. Some screws might be a little crooked. No biggie. Don't add holes. That's gross.

..and, obviously, avoid removing the pickguard completely if at all possible.

Definitely an improvement, and the new finish goes so well with that perfectly aged pickguard.

..and, obviously, avoid removing the pickguard completely if at all possible.

But if you do, make sure to bolt it down to a flat surface to avoid warping. (Read this on TB a while ago, this place is rife with good info.)
