Fender "Pure Vintage" Pickups

Some from personal experience, and just common business sense. A while back I dropped in a set of Custom Shop '60s J bass pickups from the stock ones on a American Vintage '62...not even close. The stockers were worlds better sounding.

They didn't sound alike because on 62 AVRI series Fender used Fender Original pickup set : Fender Original Jazz Bass Pickup Set 0992123000.

On the '64 they should have installed the Pure Vintage '64 which have now been discontinued and it seems that they are also installing the Original in them which are much less expensive than the CS60 ... true?

Well, I just walked into my local shop and picked up a Pure Vintage '64 Jazz set. It's odd that Fender discontinued them, and not the Precision Pure Vintage. I'm putting the set I just purchased into a MIM Standard Jazz. I imagine they'll sound better. I like the flat pole pieces as well on the '64 pickups. The MIM standards have raised poled pieces in the middle and the beveled edges. Yuck!

Review: Definitely a worthy upgrade! The tone is much warmer, yet I can open up the tone knob and get some gritty mids and treble as well. I think I need to build a new wiring harness as the pots that come stock in a MIM Jazz aren't that great. I'll probably get a different tone cap as well. These are almost as good as the SD Antiquity II pickups I have in my fretless Jazz Bass. I just didn't want to shell out that much money again for this fretted Jazz. I play the fretless a lot more.

I just put the '74s in my MIM and they are incredible. Man, Fender just owns it with these PV pickups. The bass sounds as good as any J bass I have owned now. If I had to compare the 70's to the 60's sound, I would say that the 70's are more wide open. So when you pop a note, it really nails that Jazz bass slap sound, and when you roll off the tone, it really brings out the lows and warms the tone up without pushing out boxy midrange. The neck pickup has a lot of output - 8.4k and the bridge measure at 7.3k.

Buy both sets and try them out! :smug:
It's not to be excluded that I will go this route ;) the only annoying thing is that I'll likely swap the preamp and I will have to solder and re-solder over it which is not an attractive feature in consideration of my poor soldering skills ... however the PV '74 can be found at decent prices also in Europe ... I may start with them whilst ordering and waiting for a set of Lollars, which, IMO, are truly vintage sounding single coils for a jazz bass although I've read many very good reviews of the PV '74 ! ;)
This will likely be the only solution of the dilemma ...

The PV74 are fantastic J pickups. There is really no need to look elsewhere unless you are super picky about what you want and doing a lot of studio work where you hear every detail. I can tell you that I have had serious trouble getting a Jbass that records how I want it, but once I put the PV74s in an MIM Standard, I was good to go.

Just curious as to What kind of pickups originally came with the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass? ... and what don't you like about them?
I don’t remember well but, if I’m not mistaken, the bridge one was a MIJ pickup and the neck one was a MIA PV74... problem for me was that the bridge pickup was too thin whilst the whole assembly was humming badly although this is a common defect or feature for this bass model stock ... I solved the humming issue installing SCN pickups but they are too polite ... i then briefly tried the Super 55 but I wasn’t too much impressed either .., then lately I decided to swap the preamp and going back to a good pair of single coils ... I’ll do it as soon as I’ll have a little time
