Fender Rumble Club

He was instantly attacked... not countered with a respectable response

Exactly my point earlier. The guy posts some interesting findings, a few people jump all over him, he shows what he based his comments on, and certain people jump all over him with more angry attacks and accusations.

Good on GlennA for staying cool headed and courteous, and just watching the kids throw a tantrum.

I'm a bit disappointed....to often when someone says something remotely negative or different about the Rumbles... they are instantly flamed, accused of trolling, etc. What ever happened to an intelligent debate or civilized conversation? I did not interpret anything GlennA posted as trolling, or argumentative in anyway. I'm on TB and read the Rumble club daily and really enjoy the community....this makes me want to leave..

I'm quite on the fence about this. I hope I wasn't disrespectful to GlennA; I was interested in what he had to say and I only wanted him to be more specific about how he ran his tests. I also agree that his posts were quickly dismissed as lies without further questioning. But to be honest, he was the one whose first post on this subject was on the aggressive side. He was bound to get some backlash.

I imagine it could have been a more fruitful discussion if his first post had been along the lines of "... hey guys, I found this service manual on the web and some of the numbers don't seem to match with the specs, am I missing something?".

To GlennA, if you're still reading this thread, props for questioning the information you are given, for looking other sources of information, and also for doing your own tests. You were only a couple of steps from going full scientific about this: question yourself as much as you question others, and be completely honest about where your information comes from (so others can question it as well).

Regardless of the mess, I learned something new about my Rumble and this discussion made me curious about doing some tests myself, so I consider the overall result positive. I hope GlennA sees it the same way and decides to stay on board and contribute some more.

Excellent post, and I agree totally with everything you've said here... It's obvious that Glenn is an intelligent individual, and definitely has something to offer, should he chose to do so... however, my suspicious nature makes me question the motives of someone when nearly every post of theirs has a negative connotation and/or appears to be aimed towards inciting conflict... A look all of his posts here at TB shows a bit of a pattern - although I certainly hope to be wrong about that...

Lastly, I'll note again that the very valid points you brought up about the only documentable info he offered up in regards to output specs were largely ignored, as were the suggestions about soft clipping/limiting in regards to this discussion... This further makes me question the motives of some...

Now that is interesting FirewalZ. I don't know if you have the horn on or off on your rig? Seems your tone settings correlate well with the measurements. I appreciate your comments.

Next thing to do is do some 'real' measurements with a microphone to see how my '500' fairs through the speakers.
Evaluating how an amp performs through speakers is best done with ears.
Remember, in the early days of SS, engineers swore SS sounded better because of what their scopes and charts told them. Turns out they were dead wrong.
You testing is interesting, but I have yet to get your point. What is it you are trying to prove?

You have 860 people here who are very happy with their Rumbles, like the way they sound, and are impressed with the volume they get. Then you come along and tell everyone they are not all they are cracked up to be. And you are surprised by their response?

I agree 100%- Try coming to my moms house and tell her she doesn't make the best spaghetti.

I'm still uncertain about the wattage measurement.
So I guess my next question is "Where were all the knobs during the test?".
<especially Gain & Drive>

However, the graphs I am not doubting at all. Quilter & Aguilar may have the only amps in the bass business that are truly flat.

I found out guitar amps suffer from the same thing & sometimes much worse.
i.e. my Hughes & Kettner, had to turn bass & treble back to 9 o'clock & mids to 3 o'clock to get it near flat

Some amps have the Presence knob to make up for it.

Check out his post @ 23662 for knob settings for what he calls a 'flat response' if that's what you mean.

I mean Gain & Drive, because my Rumble is heaps louder with both of those turned up

and did anyone ask what the input was for the Watts test?
<especially the level>

add:

BTW, I was wrong about Aguilar Tone Hammer being flat, because they drop off at 3 kHz:

Aguilar - Official 'Tone Hammer 500' 3.8lbs 500w Megathread!

no wonder I found mine almost useless with guitar

I take my eyes off this forum for a moment, and pandemonium ensues! And on a subject which is academic at best. I don’t really want to spend my free time looking at curves. No offense to any of the previous posters, but we’re making mountains out of molehills here. If it sounds good, it IS good, and everything else is just crap, IMHO.
In an attempt to overstate the obvious, RUMBLES ARE GREAT.PERIOD. One must not overthink something in order to truly enjoy it.

That's part of what gives each amp its own character. If they all sounded flat and undistorted, it would be a boring world :)

JakobT

here here - I have tried them all and what is funny - I have settled on a Rumble 40. I have done some of the upgrades to it as described by AstroSonic and some by Duke. And now it is my all in all amp.
Great tone in a super light package.

I played as a sub in a local band and first asked if they had pa support (they did) and I showed up with the 40. They laughed at the size but praised the tone. So it was a good Fender night.

Like you said - if it sounds good it is good. I got on this thread a while back and have left the Rumble for a bit - but right back to it I came. Yes the Ampeg V4B is a great amp and it looks and sounds great - it should at about 2000 for the head and the 2x12. But the Rumble tone sounds really good also at a much lower price.

My ears and my back love RUMBLE!
