Gone Plaid posted a message looking for opinions on the Fender American Performer series. I think. Lol. So here’s my take. I have purchased close to 60 guitars and basses in my 48 years of playing these things. And yes I still suck. Anyway. I went in a quest for a bass I told my wife I just HAD to have. She gave me that funny look she always does and said just do it already! You know your gonna! We’ve been married 37 years. I am the luckiest guy on the planet. Anyway. Now this started about 3 years ago! But I feel like you have to hold a guitar to know if it’s yours. But guitar center has effectively shut down all the mom and pop music stores, they either closed or just do lessons and band rentals now for schools. And what guitar center has on their walls, I have to in my area, suck! The same crap. Usually poopie. So after 50 or so purchases of acquiring guitars and basses by holding them and “falling in love” I started trying to buy some online. I started by buying one of the first Gibson

So after 50 or so purchases of acquiring guitars and basses by holding them and “falling in love” I started trying to buy some online. I started by buying one of the first Gibson reissues of the Les Paul JR tribute. In worn ebony. Well as we all know Gibson became famous for quality control issues over the years. Guess what. Still a thing. I wanted a short scale. It was a worn ebony. I love the tone and feel of short scales. But I’m not a Hofner fan and how it feels when I hold it, just awkward for me, and most of the other short scale basses are not serious offerings. Anyway I hated the Gibson so I shipped it back. I then purchased a Gretsch G2220 Junior Jet for $300. At that price I figured it would hold me over until I found THE bass. The Gibson cost a thousand. Anyway I quickly put some deep talking Labella flat wounds on it (my choice of strings) and a new high mass bridge and I love love love this thing! It has great natural tone! A great neck. Better tuners than I’ve had in a long time and the pick ups are powerful. And it’s the walnut stain. Just gorgeous. But because it was so inexpensive it didn’t seem like a “real” bass so You know what I mean? So my quest continued. I eventually convinced my wife on a sunny Saturday afternoon summer drive to go to House of Guitars in Rochester and hour away. Ya know. Just to look. But I had done my research and had zeroed in on an American performer mustang. Well the guy put it in my hands and after just a minute or so I looked up and there must have been a tear in my eye or something cause there was my wife saying oh just get the damm thing! Did I mention how lucky I am? So I put some Labella flat wounds on it and I love this bass. It’s a beautiful sunburst. So I love MY American performer mustang. But their all different. You may not like it. Look I recently decide I “needed” a Precision. Again. Why did I let that natural finish 78’ go! Or that beautiful blue 93 jazz bass with lace sensors go! Anyway. I purchased a G&L research L-1000 blue burst bass from a small shop in Massachusetts’s a couple of months ago. They were great. It was gorgeous. But when I held it I just knew it wasn’t mine. So back it went. I also purchased the last 75th anniversary P Bass at Fender.com. About a month or so ago. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive! But for 2000 dollars it better make breakfast for me too. My wife gave me the ok fine nod. Right! She’s awesome! We can’t afford this poopie really. Anyway. I was really disappointed by that bass. I wanted to love it! So reluctantly back it went. So I’m still on my quest for MY perfect P Bass. It’s out there! And I will know it when I hold it if it’s THE one. I dunno maybe I’ve just bought them all at this point and nothing will ever live up to my expectations again because I’ve had some great basses and guitars in my life and they just don’t make em’ like they used to. But the quest continues. So as far as anyone having an opinion on the American Performer series goes? I love mine. But these things are so subjective and each bass has a character of its own, even within the same exact models and were all looking for what we want and expect in a bass and that’s very different from person to person. You will know if it’s yours when you hold it. Sorry I went off here a little. I’m in the middle of this quest so it’s all fresh in my mind!

@GonePlaid I just looked at your profile pic. You probably have been doing this longer than me. So sorry if I sounded preachy didn’t mean to come off that way. Bottom line is my take on the American Performer Mustang, mine in a 2018 first year, is I love it.

FWIW, 7ender neck profiles and my 76 y/o hands don't 'play well together'. I had a Squier VM Jaguar SS that felt fine to me-in a ~10 minute try out at GC, so I bought it. A 3 hour gig with it and my left hand hurt like (_____). It worked 'OK' as a backup, but not as a primary. I don't 'hate' 7enders, they simply don't work for me. Gibson's and Epi's FTW.

You know, I wear a foam-style mask (which doesn't protect against infection, by the way), and I was just looking at it the other day wondering how well it would work on my bass.

I posted this in a American Performer Jazz bass thread as well, but looking for opinions on this bass. Found a used one at a reasonable price. Anyone have opinions on this or other similar basses? I seem to have G.A.S.

@RL5 thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Precision club but I’m quite certain I know what I’m looking for and will know when I found it. And btw it’s not “Mikie” for what’s it worth lol. I was born in 1961 and it was the number one boys name for 50 years running. So every other person was a Michael growing up so most Mikes got a nickname. Mikie (hey he likes it) was the worst of them IMO and it was not my nickname. Lol. Just sayin’

He kinda looked like Danny Bonaduce who “played bass”” lol so maybe that fits here somehow! Lol. Hey it’s all good no need for apologies! I knew you were going for friendly and that’s ALWAYS a good instinct! I wonder if other Micheals/Mikes (acceptable forms lol) think of Mikie the same way?! And btw @blackoutjazz yea there’s never been any conversation on this thread except for about rumbles. I can go back and point out a bunch you posted that were NOT about rumbles. But I never thought twice about it. This seems to me more a community of bass players who love their Rumbles rather than just a discussion solely about Rumbles. If that were the case everything would have been said b now that needed to be said and the thread would have ended.

I am a really big fan of the Player, MIM 75th, and Performer basses. I haven't gotten my hands on a 75th but I've loved every Player and Performer bass I've played. I own a Player Jazz bass that's my current #1 and my Fenderstien PJ uses a Player neck. If you can I highly recommend checking all of them out.
