... ... ... On pure sound alone, what would [you] say is the best sounding [Rumble] combo? ... ... ..., what's the best sounding Rumble combo? ... ... ... if I was going to own any rumble combo, what's the best one?
"Best" is
always a very subjective call from one person to another. But, since you ask, I'll throw my thoughts into the mix and you can tune the balance as you wish.
Hello, my 'name' is G-Dog and I was a 15" snob. From my first bass combo in '71 to my main bass combo in '14, it had to be a 15" (I thought). The new Rumble 500 combo announced in '14 seemed too good to be true, but I gave it a try. Surprisingly, I was almost immediately converted! The R500c became my main #1 go-to at that time! Practice, rehearsal, jam, indoor gig, outdoor gig (with or w/o cab), I just turned it up or down, as needed for everything!
Then, in '19, I gave in to my GAS for the Rumble Studio 40 and its myriad voices and sounds. But it was just gonna be my home practice amp, with the R500c getting all the road work. But, the more I dabbled in those myriad tones, the more road trips the Studio made. Since then I've not yet needed more power behind the 40 on a road trip but, when I do, I'm gonna use the R500c to reinforce the Studio. I can't wait!
All that to say, like me, your needs and tastes may change over time.
Get something that sounds good to you and can accommodate
some changes over time. First, between the 40, Studio 40, 100, 200, 500, 800 COMBO and Stage 800
pick what sounds & feels right to you by trying them out at GC or whatever stores you can get to. They were all
designed to sound good together, amps & cabs, so it's down to personal preference.
But, if you think the 40 is all you're
ever gonna need, then think again. At least go for the 100 to allow some growing room. Better yet, the 200 or 500 allow a more reasonable growing room, with or w/o a cab. For the long term, the new 800 combo, 400W alone or
switchable to
100W!, offers great flexibility for everything from practice to big gigs! But, for Ultimate Flexibility, volume and tone, the Rumble Stage 800 is certainly unsurpassed!!!
