A question has risen about my new Rumble 500. The user manual says not to leave the powerplug connected when not using it for extended periods of time. What is the reason behind this? I usually keep my amp plugged in so I can quickly use it.
It’s mostly to reduce the risk of fire in case of electrical failures. Keeping the plug connected because you use it on a regular basis is OK, but if you go on a three-month trip, you might want to unplug it.

I believe (though I could certainly be wrong) that is also to protect the amp from possible overload during electrical storms! You can't always be home in time to unplug things just before such storms. :eek:

Although properly grounded systems in newer buildings will usually prevent this, it's surprising how many buildings these days are not, or are no longer, properly grounded/protected. Such damage probably is not even covered by the warranty! :bawl:

That and power surges, but they’re harder to guard against, as they can happen very quickly, and I’d argue that «extended periods of time» is probably longer than a day or two.
 
So, here I am again with another question about my Rumble 500.

From what I can tell the 2x10 inch speakers are 16 ohms each, adding up to 8 ohms. The tweeter however is a bit unclear to me. What is the ohmage on that and how is it connected to the 2x10?

Asking because I want to connect my old Ampeg 15 inch to it which has 8 ohms and 200 Watts RMS handling. I have driven it with 250 watts for most of my life, keeping the volume in check so as not to damage it.

I kind of suspect that when I engage the tweeter, the combo uses more of the 500 watts for the 2x10 plus the tweeter than it would without the tweeter engaged. And I might actually be able to turn it full open with the 15 inch connected without worrying about blowing the 15 inch up.

Anyone know how this works?

Not sure if this will help but, when nothing is plugged in, the combo runs at 350 watts. That includes however the tens and tweeter interact. I'm pretty sure when you plug in an 8 ohm cabinet, it sends about half of 500 watts to the internal speakers and half to the extension cabinet.

However
, the manual says:
"EXTERNAL SPEAKER OUTPUT (200/500 COMBO ONLY) — Connect an 8Ω (minimum impedance) speaker cabinet here. The power rating of the external cabinet should meet or exceed the rating listed on the amplifier."

We know it is not sending 500 watt to internal and external speakers at the same time. Realistically, it shouldn't receive more than half which is 250 watts. But even then, you would be running 250 watts into a 200 watt cabinet so there are no guarantees you might not blow the Ampeg speaker.

Some Rumblers have uses a Rumble 115 cabinet with the 500, but those are rated at a safe 300 watts.

I asked that very question a year, or so, ago and it was resolved here. To summarize, there is a capacitor in the tweeter connection that a very small amount of power from however much the internal speakers are receiving (up to 350W alone, or only up to 250W with an external 8 ohm cab). So little, in fact, that the tweeter's Impedance is negligible in practical application. So, ignore the tweeter impedance! :thumbsup:


PS: Even the 10" speakers are not exactly 16.000000 ohms themselves! I recall the exact tolerances, but it's something on the order of, say, 14.86 to 16.93 ohms (don't quote me). Likewise the common 8 and 4 ohms ratings can be +/- "an ohm, or so.
