Fender Rumble Club

Guy on FB posted that he was looking for other amps because his rumble wasn't "professional" enough. When I asked him why, he said (to paraphrase), "Mostly because I don't see pro bands using them on stage". I don't necessarily agree with him, but I understand his position.

Your thoughts on this?

I think only "professional posers" restrict themselves to the tools they've noticed other "professionals" using, especially very expensive gear. It superficially says, "Look what I can buy, or get sponsored! Having this makes me (a) professional." (No, it doesn't.)

I believe "professional integrity" allows us to use whatever tools we believe to be appropriate for our craft, even if it is less expensive, regardless of what others may think. It says unapologetically, "This is what I do. I hope you like it but, if you don't, that's OK too."

Seems to me that's about as ignorant as "..if you're not playing an American Strat or American P, or (insert anything here), you can't be professional.." What crap! He'll chase a name or a preconceived notion until he grows up.

I agree, Tim-may! Here's my take on a consummate professional in another thread.

You can't be pro if you're not playing what all the pros are using. Everybody knows that...

Yes. He's a effing idiot.

I bought a mid 70s blue line SVT/810 rig 'cos 'that's what all the "cool" bassists had'. Used it for 2 1/2 years on a 6 nights a week Miami Beach hotel gig. Never liked it. Sold it as soon as that gig ended. Woulda been better off using the amp I already had(1)and saved the $$$, but it wasn't "cool".

I asked that very question a year, or so, ago and it was resolved here. To summarize, there is a capacitor in the tweeter connection that a very small amount of power from however much the internal speakers are receiving (up to 350W alone, or only up to 250W with an external 8 ohm cab). So little, in fact, that the tweeter's Impedance is negligible in practical application. So, ignore the tweeter impedance!

PS: Even the 10" speakers are not exactly 16.000000 ohms themselves! I recall the exact tolerances, but it's something on the order of, say, 14.86 to 16.93 ohms (don't quote me). Likewise the common 8 and 4 ohms ratings can be +/- "an ohm, or so.

Thanks for reiterating that! Makes sense that some tolerances are involved. I don't think I will ever need the 15 inch, but now I know that if I do I need to be careful. I've been running 250 watts into it all my life and never needed to put my amp more than halfway on the master. I suspect the 350 watts of the combo alone will be enough for my purposes.

Due to circumstances I never got around to getting a driver's license, so I'm glad I now have a light weight, portable solution to take with me in the bus or taxi to a gig in town. But I need to get my reputation built up again before I even have to think about gigging again. lol. But at least I'm ready for the future.

In a pro band I used to play in we would always rent a van so in that case I can bring the extra cab if needed.

You only posted a pic from the video, so, of course, I had to go to YT and listen to it. Great song. Talented group of musicians. Really enjoyed it.

Adding this one because the drum kit is the complete opposite of the Assassin video.

Bonus video with the Assassin horn section.

Double bonus video. Three Basses. This is TalkBass after all.:bassist::bassist::bassist:

Excellent stuff!

As long as you (and the whole band) wear shades, indoors, then you're always cool with a Rumble....

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to track down the YT video of their Live at MSG set. Listening now. Great way to start a Sunday morning on the bay in Arcachon. Beautiful breeze blowing through the apartment. Lovely tunes to go with it.

Joggers, if you've been using a 250W amp at no more than half volume into your external cab, then you haven't been putting the full 250W into the cab. That Master control is your friend to safely run a lesser rated cab with a higher rated amp. But it does require some experience and attention to any possible sounds of distress that may be coming from the cab. But those knobs are hardly ever linear. I've read some who claim that, on many/most amps, just halfway up, at 12 o'clock, can be 80% to 90% of full power! Possibly much more power than you think you're sending to a lower-power cab, though still not full power.

Ah, I wasn't clear about my old amp. It's a 500 watt amp that sends 250 watts into the 8 ohms Ampeg cab, according to the maker. I've been using that with the master at 12 o clock only once on a big stage.
