Well, everyone's mileage varies, as they say, but I've been using my R40 for trio bar gigs for years now, plus musical theater, and it does just fine.
Thanks, that's good to know! I like the tone of my R40 more than the R60 so I think I'll keep bringing it to practice to get my sounds and volume dialed in.
Per the ACB 50 Manual, the two sets of inputs are for the two different channels. And the two inputs for each channel are for different sensitivities. 
Kindof, per the V1 Rumble 60 Manual that 20 - 13 year old amp is 46 lb.s! And, at that power it won't be much louder than your Rumble 40. 
The V3 Rumble 100 would be noticeably louder at just 22 lb.s, only 4 lb.s more!

I've noticed that the R60 and some other amp brands have inputs for passive and active basses. Is it just a volume cut or is there more to it (protecting the amp or speaker)?
My Ibanez TMB100 has a preamp (15dB boost/cut) and I really have to crank the volume on the R60 to get a good level when plugged into the active input. My R40 only has one input but I haven't cranked the volume past 3 o'clock.
Should I keep using the active input or can I use the passive input without worrying I'm going to blow poopie up (especially because the amp isn't mine)?

It would have to be a fairly loud bar gig for the R100 not to work. Sure, if it's painfully loud death metal, you might need two R100s or an R200. an R500 would club the guitarists and drummers into catatonia.

i changed out the grill cloth on my Rumble 800 .
went with a more "vintage" looking cloth ,
and i think it looks pretty nice , imo ...
not loose , fits nice and tight , but with just enough flexibility .
no grill buzzing , still sounds awesome .
the original grill on top of the material i picked out .
... let the work begin ...
... the completed project !!

Early morning gig with my Rumble 800 and my ‘72 Jazz going through a Sadowsky preamp.
No, the FOUR inputs (two for channel 1, two for channel 2) are classic "hi/lo" impedance inputs from Fender history. Passive basses into input 1 (1 meg) and active ones on input 2 (128 kOhm). As I tried to decipher the circuitry, channel 1 is a modified AA864 Bassman circuit with variable midrange, channel 2 is a completely new design
FYI, for those interested, when I connected my R100 to my R40 (effects out of R100 to main input on the R40) I found that the volume, eg knobs still work and function as normal on both. I assumed only one would be in control like when folks go effects out to effect in, but not the case. I suppose it works just like a preamp like when I use my sansamp into the top main input of either amp. A duh moment for me, though I did only have a few sips of morning coffee at that point

As such, I believe even your temporary ownership of some Rumbles would qualify you for membership here, if you wish. Just tell us about which one(s) you have/deal in. I think others here would also join in my curiosity to learn more about yourself, as well.

You oughta know that's not enough info to narrow it down. Depending on your definition of "medium sized", other instruments (if any), audience size (and demeanor), desired SPL, and room acoustics it would be possible for you to use the Rumble 15, 25, 40, 100, 200, 500 or 800s!See our Rumble Summary Info chart to compare physicalities of the different models, keeping in mind that the 200, 500 & 800s need extension cabs to reach full nameplate power. And, if you're interested in a low-power combo, check the link immediately under the chart for feature comparisons of the 15, 25 & 40. The larger Rumbles mostly have the same features as the 40, except for the LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800 modeling combos with much, much more.
That said, I get more use from my Rumble Studio 40 for my Americana (Country/Bluegrass/Cajun) jams and gigs in "medium" venues, than my R500c for my loud Country cover band.
