Fender Rumble Club

Theese amps today are too horny!
False alarm. The buzz is back. I'm really rather annoyed. First amp in 30 years that has had issues in less than 6 months of ownership. I have no idea what it is. If I was still within the return window, it'd be going back. Too bad as I really do like the combo otherwise.

EDITED: It seems to only hit from the fifth position A and lower. The notes that really count. The sound is like my neck is dead at that spot...I'm starting to wonder if a speaker went even though I run it on Full and have never had it past 50% output. Is that possible? I know it isn't my bass as I ran direct to my GK MB 212ii and Genzler Magellan 350/Mark Bass 210 with zero issues).

Can you use a tone generator like in the Tunable App and have it run while you poke your ears around to try and locate the source? 03345AFC-CD0A-44CE-878C-DD7CC113D27A.png

Hi! I looped an A and here's what happens. I also hear what sounds like "farting out" from the 10's if I dig in. 50% input gain and 40% master output. 200 and 800 watts.

EDIT The video isn't playing right. I'll figure something out for a better option. maybe YouTube

Another update...emailed Fender and sent a video. New horn/tweeter coming in a few days. I'll update shortly. My faith in them has definitely increased! Great support!

Can't really hear anything wrong on the video, dunno what mic You used.
I got no horn in the r100, when things rattle, it's the room (glass in cabinets, doors, windows)
Good to hear You managed to get a new horn from Fender!
To debug if it's really the horn, can You just switch it off/on? (does not work if it's the housing tough)
edit: listened with headphones, that sounds bad :/
"50% input gain and 40% master" theese alone doesn't really tell anything, it also depends on the signal You put into that jack (how hot Your instrument/pedals are, and ofc. EQ)

Thanks for the response. Yes, off or on, there is a buzz (almost like if I had string buzz coming through the horn). On the higher end of the register, I don't notice it as much, just on the lower side. The sound is definitely jumping out around that one "A" frequency.

The mic was just my cell phone. I'll try get a better recording with one of my condensers tonight.

The sound you heard was direct from my bass. Volume at max (my standard). EMG X, 18 volts. I didn't here the breakup on the 10's until I really dug in (which is rare).

It just seems weird that I'm seeing this with this amp and not with anything else I have and I didn't hear it initially or at any gigs (or didn't notice it).

Just a thought, Pelly, but it would seem to me that 50% Gain setting might be a tad high for an 18 volt pickup signal at max coming into the amp. That seems pretty hot! Perhaps turning one, or more likely both, down a bit would help. Dunno why this rig is the only one to complain about your standard setup, but it may be worth a try.

Or maybe it's just me, and my different modus operandi. I keep even my passive basses turned down in case I need a quick boost "in the heat of battle". A little headroom left in the pickup, like the amp, can be a good thing!

On my 67 Gibson NR TBird, volume is maxed. On my Epi Embassy, I can run volume ~8 to leave some headroom. Rumbles are inaccessible once we start playing, so I gots to 'set it and forget it' b4 we play.

Heya G Dog. Yeah, I usually don't run direct. Its all in from the bass to my pedalboard through a buffer, etc to an MXR DI and then I adjust the clean line output of the DI to the level needed for the amp. I'll try dialing it back a bit but I'm also trying to avoid input gain on the amp at 10% and output at 90% to make it loud enough to compete with two guitars. NONE of my amps like that kind of gain staging! at that 40%/50% level, I have plenty of headroom to adjust as needed through the gig.

I'll see what I can come up with. The one thing I miss on this amp is any kind of input level indicator to show where the loading is.

New (to me) amp day! My return to bass started with a Rumble 15 early during Covid lockdown (which will now become a keyboard amp for my daughter). That was good enough to start but I wanted an amp that delivered better thump and the possibility of playing with others, so I got a Rumble 40 (which will now become my practice amp at a different location). I'm sold on the Rumble experience, but wanted an upgrade to be ready for as far as this bass thing will take me. I got a great offer on a used 500 on Reverb, Santa came early this year! There's some minor damage to the grill cloth (which was disclosed and accounted for the nice price) but otherwise it looks and sounds perfect. Very psyched!

I believe you are correct. I think many people misunderstand the purpose of the gain control. A gain control is meant to attenuate the signal coming in to the preamp section. The higher the input signal, the less gain you need. That is why when you turn the gain up, you get that "grit" in the sound. It means you are overdriving the input signal. Too little gain will make your amp sound weak.

Would have been nice to have a ‘peak’ or ‘clip’ light on Rumbles like some other amps have.

It wouldn’t do much. The in-built Delta-Comp limiter makes it very difficult to clip the signal, so it wouldn’t really serve a practical purpose. [ <<<< This right here! <<<< ]

So, following up on the horn issue. got up this morning and this was on my door step. Factory fresh 800 combo.

I'll never question their support and they just made a customer for life!
