Fender Rumble Club

Hello fellow Rumblers. I've been stalking this tread since I got my Rumble 100 a few days ago. I'm not a musician although I have some experience in electronic music production. I'm looking forward to learning to play the bass.

Hello Chaps,

I've arrived on this thread because

(see https://www.talkbass.com/threads/running-combo-amp-quietly-95-of-the-time.1625719/)

and I do have a question.

I recently bought a Helix Stomp with a bonus I received from work. In short, it's incredible, I love it, gush, gush, etc.

My band mate has recommended to me using a Fender amp with the Helix since (in his words, paraphrased) "Fender amps don't tend to colour the sound too much and you'll get a good representation of what's coming out of the arse end of the Helix if you get one".

I did a quick search of this thread and the Helix doesn't get many mentions.

View attachment 5220497

So - can anyone corroborate or refute my bandmate's assertion? Will a Rumble 100 be a good amp which lets the Helix do its work without interfering? Or will it alter the sound a lot? Under what conditions? (N.b. if I buy one, it will be used for bass and 6-string at home, and for bass under "small gig" conditions.)

Any shared experience will be gratefully received - thanks in advance!

Probably if you run it into the fx return, should sound fine. Speakers always are a factor in the tone but you may be able to tweak or disable the Helix speaker simulator if necessary (I doubt you will have to)

Welcome to Rumbleland. A wise decision you have made, my young apprentice. :bassist: Greetings from the usually sunny southwest coast of France.

Went and watched the Fender video showing off the studio 40. I dunno, all the other amps it can emulate--they were ok but they just don't Rumble. I mean, yeah, the pedal emulations would be nice, but I wasn't a big pedal user back when I was trying to play guitar, and I'm even less now on bass. I just want the bass to shine thru most of the time. Putting the studio 40 on the GAS back shelf for now.

So OK, is the S2010 still the "best of the best" for replacing the speaker in the (non-studio) Rumble 40? Worth it? All opinions, half-formed or not, welcome.

I had a regular 40 (and 200) that I had to sell when I moved (the power supplies weren't dual voltage). I wanted to replace the 40, but decided on the Studio 40 instead of the regular one because: a) it has an effects loop, b) it has a Di output with Pre/Post option, c) it has a tweeter (used when playing music through the Aux input), and d) it's got dampening padding. I don't really use all of the presets, just a couple of the Rumble v3 presets. Also, for purely aesthetic reasons, I like the black grill cloth.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I play bass and drums in two separate projects. I've just bought the Rumble 40 2nd hand, half the retail price. Lemme just say it rumbles my soul. ('Fender Mustang Micro is enough for the bedroom player' they said. They were wrong.)

IMHO, in the R40, the S2010 would be the best for all around usage if you want more. More volume. More tone. More seems to be the best description for how they perform/sound. I use them in my two "TB110" cabs with my R200 Head. They sound like the stock speaker, except with more. At lower volume, one cab doesn't get the same feel and fullness as the two cabs and sounds a little flat. Turn up the volume and/or add the second cab, it goes into beast mode!
I like the Dayton Audio PA255-8, that's in my R40, for a fuller tone, that sits more in the Blues-Rock sound. It has a little more volume, but leans more in the low-mids with a slightly crunchier tone. The treble is a little bit sharper, but not over done.
If you do decide to swap the speaker, follow AstroSonic's guidance in the speaker swap section of the Rumble Wiki pages.

Guessing you meant an 800HD! The clock is ticking to see if GP made a deal...
Mike isn't ready at the moment, but my R100 will go for sale when I pull the trigger on a R800. When that happens I will let everyone here know.
And @MadJack if wanted to buy it, we could always meet halfway and make it an excuse to meet and have lunch/dinner and an adult beverage or two :D:thumbsup:

I was curious about upgrades to the R40. Took me a bit to find the right location for this. If others are looking to find AstroSonic's information, start here

I am certainly curious how much difference the Eminence S2010 replacement would be. $130 for a speaker upgrade on a $230 combo. Starts to be about the same price I paid for my TE ELF + TC 208 combo (albeit, the R40 is in a nice easily portable package.

I drilled and installed a top hat in my Rumble 40 and have it elevated on a short PA stand. I like having it up closer to my ear for sure. I think this is a really good upgrade. Now to figure out a good solution to keep it from rotating when on the stand. Yeah, I could jam something in there, but that seems inelegant. Maybe some neoprene in the well of the top hat to add friction. Maybe 3D print some kind of clamp. Hmm. Will have to think about this.

When I swapped in the Dayton PA255-8, I had it from a previous cab I had experimented with. I would find it hard to choose a speaker at the price of the S2010 to convert, but the PA255-8 is a little more reasonable. I also prefer the PA255-8 sound with the R40. The stock speaker is pretty good and the other two just add choices to adjust the sound to taste. If I had to do it again, and the price of the speakers were the same, I would still go with the Dayton, just because it fits my taste better. The S2010 I think is more of an all around, balanced sounding speaker, like the stock speaker, but with the "more" as I've said before.

Well, the Dayton is half the price. That is nice for sure. But still a good chunk of the cost of the entire initial R40 package.

I'm sorry you took so long, Ho. Did you not try the Rumble Modifications section of your Rumble Wiki page? Or the Speaker Replacement section?
.
I did, but there is so much information there it took me quite a while to find the post referenced above. If one knows where something is, it is easier to find. I felt like I was stumbling in the dark until I found it.
The TB archives is a treasure trove of information and very helpful advice. I know that I have drawn a lot from these pages for sure. There is just so much of it to try and discover and curate.

A note I made to myself is to try and post a callback link if I know I am pointing out very specific information or resources. That allows those looking for an answer to get there directly, but also allows those who enjoy the journey of discovery to take their own path as well.

Hello, neuty. Did you read those few links you found here?

...

Your own ears, of course, are the best reference for finding your own preferences. Surely, your local music store will let you try a Rumble, or two? If so, be aware that setting the knobs to all vertical (12 o'clock) is not actually flat. Try this to set a Rumble to actual flat.

...

I hope this helps you. Come let us know when you get your Rumble and we'll give you a free membership to The Club. :smug:
.

Hey G-Dog - thank you for the reply and the links.

It's taken me a while to reply because I've enjoyed reading them. The modelling comparison was interesting (if not directly relevant as I'm already committed to the Helix) and - full disclosure - I also spent some time reading this thread - https://www.talkbass.com/threads/ye...r-rumble-100-combo-amp-advice-needed.1473132/ - just for a sort of "red team" take on the Rumble too. Due dilligence and all that.

What I haven't had time to do yet is search the main Helix threads to see what mention Rumbles get there, but I will - it's just a matter of having the time. I'll get to it soon, if not this evening.

Since this all started with my bandmate talking about colour-free tones and all that stuff, I'll think I'll drag him down to the local PMT (UK) and get him to play / listen. I'd be surprised if they didn't have a whole selection of Rumbles in stock to try out. I'll take a picture of "flat" when I go.

Assuming it all goes as currently planned and I don't suddenly discover something completely new, I'll be back here in a bit for a membership number. But I will keep an open mind at this point, on account of it being a decent amount of cash and also potentially affecting the little trio we're just starting up (to which aforementioned bandmate and I belong, along with our friendly neighbourhood drummer). It's a nice problem to have to think about though.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Yes, due diligence is always a good idea. And please remember https://www.talkbass.com/threads/ye...r-rumble-100-combo-amp-advice-needed.1473132/ where I mention a bit of acoustic fill in the port of any "boxy sounding" R100 can improve the tone (if needed). The store should let you "put a sock in it" (or something) after easily removing the velcro'd grille cloth.

In case you miss the picture of the 10, 1:30, 2, 9:30 flat settings, most of us here just remember the close approximation of 10, 2, 2, 10.
