Fender Rumble Club

A community center for one of the over 55 communities. Band member lives in the community so he is working out a deal where do a loose rehearsal/almost gig for free on a Sunday where anyone can walk in and watch/listen and then we can use if for practice again Monday evening with the doors locked for a private practice to work on things. The community pool is just outside, so folks can wander in and out as they wish to give a listen. He will spread the word and hopefully draw some more people in with the hopes that there will soon also be paid gigs there and at a few of the other communities he as contacts at.
At any given time, there were maybe 15-20 there, coming and going, as they happened to be going to the pool, but that should increase over time I imagine.
So it is nice to have a practice where you aren't crammed into someone's spare bedroom or a hot garage to practice. :D
 I think I know which one. We were asked by a woman who saw us at Ft. Pierce Elks about playing there. Tom gave her a price-a little higher than usual 'cos of the distance involved. Never heard back. Oh, well. Their loss.

It's all fun and games until the passersby start making requests during rehearsal!

Freebird!!!

People who know our band also know better than to request it. We'll play the damn thing-and they wind up looking kinda foolish.

Saturday nite gig, someone shouted out "FREEBIRD!" probably tongue-in-cheek. Our frontman said, "There's one in every crowd." I keep telling them we need to have this song ready for when it's asked for--seriously or otherwise. But I can't seem to get everybody to embrace the idea. I wouldn't want it on a typical set list but every classic rock band should have this in their back pocket.

For one thing, it's at least 5 minutes ya don't hafta try to figure out what to play next(we don't use set lists-play to the crowd).

In some form or fashion. While this is one of my favoritest songs ever, I’d be down with some musical mayhem. Have you heard the Austin Lounge Lizards’ version of “Brain Damage” from “Dark Side of the Moon”? If not, you really need to. You could do a similar version of Freebird, or give it the Phil Collins “Something in the Air Tonight” treatment, or Johnny Cash, or funk, or whatever.

Nah. That'd take too much effort. One of our guitarists knows enuff of the lyrics to get away with it, the rest of us just follow along(the drummer's not too hip to the double time section).
I do "Folsom Prison", but we do it ~1 1/2 times faster than the original.

If you haven't heard it, check out the Surreal McCoys rendition of WHOLE LOTTA FOLSOM. It's on YT. It's pretty fun and we do a pretty close rendition of it but with a really wild drum solo in the middle. It gets pretty good response and it's a WHOLE LOTTA FUN..!

whole lotta folsom surreal mccoys

I meant @trseal . I know y’all know it already and your audience wants at least a reasonable facsimile of the original.

I fixed the song name (Brain Damage).
And that Surreal McCoys song is freaking brilliant in concept and execution.

I like it, but our usual 60s+y/o crowd wouldn't. Plus we'd hafta rehearse it and that ain't gonna happen.
Besides-it's the onliest song I get to blow my train whistle.

Idk... I'm 60's+ (and + again). Led Zep WHOLE LOTTA LOVE (1969) would be in their wheelhouse and ANYBODY that age would be familiar with the the Cash FOLSOM PRISON BLUES. You might be selling you audience short (or maybe it's just a Florida... thing...)

Youngin'! You don't know what you're missing (and maybe you don't want to know!).

I have an idea. Many friends are in the over 70 age group and so I’m watching knee and shoulder replacements, spontaneous hospital visits, etc. My mentor and predecessor at work has two sayings:

“If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough” and “getting old ain’t for sissies”.

Let's just say we've learned what works. We have ~200+ songs we can do. Rehearsing up a 'specialty' number that we might play 2x/year isn't worth it.

The advantages of being with the same group of people for an extended period of time. We've been together since early this year and have about 40 that we've rehearsed (in some way, shape or form) and probably another 10 or so that we haven't rehearsed but could play in a pinch.
