File sharing doesn't hurt musicians

However, IMHO, whether music sales benefit artists or sleazy music executives more is simply a gross rationalization for people getting stuff for free that they used to have to buy (ie: steal). The idea that more and more people somehow find ways to justify out and out theft of valuable property to the extent that it's now accepted as simple a "change in the industry" is repugnant to me.

Booyah. :bassist:

Big difference, that is a product not a service. Products have a cost. Music is a service.

And making music does not have costs ?

Who GAVE you your instrument and amp ?

Who GAVE you recording computers and software ?

Who GAVE you money for the time it took you to create the music (you know, the time AWAY from other productive things like a job) ?

Maybe you don't value your own time and talent, but what gives you the right to speak for every other musician ?

Yeah, tape sharing is always the downfall of up and coming bands. Just look Metallica, they barely get by. I think Lars only has a 35 million dollar art collection these days.... poor guy.

Metallica's first three or four albums came out before there was even an Internet. Had there been file sharing in those days we probably wouldn't even be talking about them now.

How about, instead of making people pay for the music, let them pay what they want... If they want it for free, fine. If they want to pay, then they pay. It keeps everything under control, legally, the people are happy... It makes sense :\

Please feel free to do that. As for me, I don't care whether the people are happy or not, they can't have my stuff for free and it doesn't make sense for me.

What amazes me is that it is considered normal to pay like $2K a year in new phones, ipods, computers, broadband subscriptions in and outside the house and what not in order to be able listen to music, and then $0 for the music itself (especially with the argument that "I can't afford to pay for it")

if you are going to steal the ipod from some kid, tap into wireless connection others are paying for without asking, hijack 4G connections, and share files, I would disapprove but at least there'd be some sort of principle at work, and you'd have some balls.

Everything else is just being a cheapskate through the way of least resistance. Which is fine but spare us the huffin'-an-a-puffin' and the selfserving justifications, please?

This!

Amen.

File sharing is a hot-button issue among musicians, professional and amateur. Some support it, some don't. The entire concept of selling prerecorded music as a retail product has been turned upside down. It's never going to be like it was even 10-15 years ago. You don't have to like it, but you will have to deal with it.

By the way, I went to a show last night and bought two cds from two different touring bands. And right now, I'm downloading the entire Samhain and SNFU discography. I used to own both of these bands material in various forms in the past (LP, cass, CD) and it has been lost, damaged, never returned by friends, or just vanished. I download a lot of music that I bought and owned in the past and I feel no guilt about it. If you don't like it, I really don't care.

I've lost other items in the same way.

Is it OK for me to steal replacement items due to my own or my friends carelessness ?

Your rationalizing is pathetic :rollno:

If you want to replace your lost items without paying for them, that's your decision. It has nothing to do with me. I probably won't even notice that you did it.

I'm not rationalizing anything about file sharing. I download music, movies, and TV shows because someone (a lot of someones) has made them available on-line for free. Period.

So if I steal a bass, then make it available to you for free, you'd feel justified in taking it?

You stole a bass from where?

Why does it matter? Could have been from a big box store.....could have been from the backseat of some musician's car. Doesn't matter

From whom?

See above
How are you making it available for free?

I'm giving it to you because you're clearly in need of free stuff.

Are you giving it away because you don't want it?

Again, doesn't matter. Obviously I don't want it because I'm giving it to you.

So the answer is yes.

Hey, go ahead, download away if that's what you want to do. Just don't have any illusions about not hurting anyone by doing it. As a previous poster said, have the balls to admit what it is you're really about.
