Finding out you're being replaced... via Craigslist!

You're jumping to conclusions. Not saying you're wrong, but this:

"We play covers (redacted) however, I'M INTERESTED IN WRITING AND PLAYING ORIGINALS"

...does not say your band is replacing you.

It says:

"We play covers (redacted) however, I'M INTERESTED IN WRITING AND PLAYING ORIGINALS"

"WE PLAY" .... HOWEVER .... "I'M INTERESTED"

Words mean things. He even capitalized the part about HIM wanting to go original. Take it at face value and it doesn't even hint anything about you or your band.

Do you not speak to this person? I would just casually ask him next time we were together, "so I saw you're starting a new project..."

Does he not have the prerogative to start an original project and advertise for someone who is not involved in other projects like you are?

No offense, I just think you took off down the wrong rabbit hole here. Then again, I could be wrong too. Just think about it...

Good luck.

This was not my original impression when I read the ad, but now that Chris says it....he could be right.

Be the bigger man and talk to them about it. Have a heart to heart.

You know the old saying, "when you assume, you make an (fill in the rest yourself)......

Whatever you do, don't burn any bridges you never know what can happen in the future. I just got a call back for a gig with an old band I quit years ago. I said I'd do it. Soon I'll have the cash to buy a ditto with no money out of my current budget. For now, keep it movin and keep playing, even if it is in your living room.

You could always talk to them, but look, they posted an ad without first talking to you. This means they're already satisfied that replacing you -- with the risk of killing the band -- is easier than trying to work out whatever issues they have with you.

Offer to play out any gig commitments already on the books, but stop attending rehearsals. Let them know that it's an amicable departure, and that you will remain available to work for them as a sub or sideman on a case-by-case basis.

This does not seem so hard, really. Looks like the singer wants to put together a new original music project. If you want to be part of that project, just talk to him. If you want to keep the current situation in place, again, talk to him and ask whether he is planning to leave the current band to pursue the new project.

Either way, don't get all wound up about this and don't worry about having to pretend you don't know about this new project, etc.

If you're good there's always work.

If that's your money band and it doesn't pay that well then find a wedding/corporate band to join for money.

If you aren't good enough for to get in a band like that, take your new found extra time to woodshed.

Definitely don't burn the bridge.

Now to be honest, I'd been trying to exit this band for some time, but it's just starting to pay off and I recently had a change of heart.

I think this may be the real issue ^^^^

Were you "not as dedicated"?..flakin off? ...maybe he heard through the grapevine that you were looking to quit, and didnt want to wait around until you screwed them over?
You said you were in 2 other bands right?

It's true, based on the ad, he sounds like a douche, but you cant blame him for wanting to protect a band that's finally makin money or whathave you.

JMO?...

Your singer sounds like an idiot. A delusional and narcissistic idiot.

Saved me the trouble of spelling narc...narsi...narca... +1

The band should be called Penii...the plural, in Latin.

I think we should all reply to the add!

I can see the guy scratching his head "Wow, we've gotten 278 responses to the add, but amazingly, not a single one meets all of the stringent requirements!" :D

Just talk to the guy (although, based on his ad, he doesn't seem like he'd be much fun to talk to!). Tell him the whole scoop: your friend saw the ad, told you, etc... See what he says. If it is, in fact, a side project then great - no harm done.

If he starts backpedalling and hemming and hawing then you'll know exactly what's going on and he'll know that you know.

If the latter is the case, Mystic Michael and Fdeck summed it up perfectly: Announce your exit at the next rehearsal, fulfill any gigs that are already booked and, most importantly, keep it professional and cordial. There's no need to burn a bridge, even if you never intend to cross it again.

Yeah I agree, he could be just looking for a side project to do originals. Is he replacing the whole band? Or, if you wanted to be a jerk, do what the others said...reply using your name saying that you are in a band with a real egotistical idiot of a singer with no talent so you are looking for better. THAT, would be hilarious!

Off Topic;

The ad is a little over the top, however I see both sides of it.

Guys showing up for auditions with no experience and unprepared. It happens.

Some of you have heard this, " Guy comes into audition, "I was really busy and didn't have time to listen to the songs"

I think the ad might screen out the guys with little to no band experience, however I would do a brief phone interview before scheduling anyone to audition.

Whoever wrote that ad is an a-hole... or at least, comes off as one.

I would have stopped reading as soon as I got to the all-caps. No need to shout, son. I predict he is going to have a very hard time finding participants for his project.

I think you're best off without him.
