First bass riffs you learned

First real bassline I ever learned was that iconic riff that plays under Peggy Lee’s song Fever. That was when I was on upright.

First electric bass riff I ever learned was the line to Them Changes by Buddy Miles.

(Funny how despite mainly being a progger by trade, my roots are mostly in Jazz, Motown and Funk. Just goes to show you never know where you’ll end up landing.)

Smiling Face-James Taylor. I was a singer and decided to pick up bass back in 92. I was a huge JT fan and always love the bass on this one. Of course once I discovered Lee Sklar’s style I was hooked. He’s in my top 5. Maybe number 1. It was the first song I learned to play and sing at the same time.

I got dragged to his concert in the mid 90s by my first wife. I thought it would be a bunch of people in argyle sweater vests listening to some boring music.

I was right about the audience. Buncha stuck up Chapel Hill wine and cheese crowd. They got offended if you stood up to applaud. o_O But JT had a KILLER band and they threw down.

(Sorry for the derail)

I played acoustic first, so most likely it was a riff I already knew. I think the first thing I recall trying to learn was just a basic boogie 1-4-5. I got a bass in June and in August we had a gig and we played Zeppelin covers with no singer for a church fair with a few other things thrown in there. Dazed and Confused, a bad version of Ramble On, Stairway, Communication Break Down not sure what else.
