First build: 5 string EUB

A couple more things once the tuners came in.


I think there was too much of a radius, so knock that down some:

Drilled for the tuners:

Fit the bridge "flush mounted".

Next things:
make a nut (oak)
Get the tail piece finished
Get the remaining body laminates done
File the saddles down to size and do a string mockup
Order the piezo cable
Get the buffer circuits made (An electronics engineer i know volunteered)

2 questions:

Is the angle of the tuners something practical or is it just aesthetic choice?

Is the bridge adjustable the way you sunk it into the body or is it adjust then set it in and string it?

Looks great so far, but i dont kno much about EUB's

I haven't decided whether to do the "angled" tuners or not, it is an aesthetic thing either way though.

I may end up filing out at an angle on the top side where the phillips heads are, so that a screw driver can be fit in at an angle to still adjust it with the stings on.

I guess one of the last things i'll end up doing is, putting a thin laminate top on the body and headstock, just gotta find some veneer wood that looks good to me.

Did some more work today, had a recording cancellation, good for me.....

Made a nut out of oak, a tail piece out of oak and mocked up with the strings on it:

Obviously have alot of work to do on it still. Discovered that I need to make taller saddles, except for the 2 end ones (g and b), not tall enough, but almost.
I will have alot of shaping, that i still need to do. The saddles, once the replaced ones are finished, need to be filed down into their final shape. Nut needs to be slotted, i may angle the face of it to the same angle as the headstock. More work, more work and more work.

Finally, some updates.

Glued the last 2 sides on, decided to chop both sides of the bridge down, now it'll fit in there nice:

I think the plan is, to use a very thin laminate of oak for the face of the body and headstock.

Had to make some veneer. Hmm, Looks like all I have is..............
Oak veneer plywood. So with my trusty router, I took 3 layers off of the plywood, to get an almost paper thin top and headstock top.I'll try and glue it on tomorrow.

Contact cement was applied to the headstock and body and clamped.

Well, the veneer parts are done now, put 2 coats of tung oil, I think I like the light color, the fingerboard i'll stain dark.

Really the only cost was the truss rods and tuners.

I had alot of the wood given to me for this and my other one i'm building. If you have not already, I'd highly suggest picking up one of two books, Martin Koch's "Building Electric Guitars", or Melvyn Hiscock's "Make Your Own Electric Guitar". I pulled alot of ideas and have a much better understanding going into these projects, rather than asking 50 million questions, but actually saving the real good questions, rather than all the trivial ones and Practice before you just jump into it, reserve the good wood for when you've got it down. Sufficient tools are also a must.

Ive got a whole wood shop available to me, ive got basic skills, so id just need a bit of guidance although practice wont hurt, I dont want to build an EUB, but an actual upright which will be quite a challenge.
