Saved my allowance and bought the debut REO Speedwagon album. Not exactly sure what year, but it was mid- '70s. It's still my favorite from them.

First record I was gifted was
First Album I ever purchased with my own money was
at least your friend had good taste.
The first song I remember dancing and singing along to was Weird's Al's "I'm Fat", which is a parody of Michael's Jackson's "Bad".
The first cassette that I got as a gift was Green Day's "Dookie", and shortly after that I bought The Offspring's "Smash".
The first CD's I bought were The Tragically Hip's "Trouble at The Henhouse" and and Metallica's "Load" (bought both on the same day).
There was a big gap between Weird Al and the cassettes from Green Day/Offspring. I listened to Weird Al on one those old record (vinyl) players that played smaller records (I guess singles). Shortly after that my family went through a rough patch and I didn't have any means to listen to my own music until maybe 6-8 years later, when my older sister bought me a tape deck and "Dookie" for Christmas.

If memory serves it was two of them for my first purchase. A double album of Credence Clear Water, and Iron Butterfly.
Hahaha ... A friend of mine from high school refused to listen to that album while driving, because he got pulled over and ticketed for speeding twice, both times while listening to Turn On The Action.

It was a 45 RPM, Twist and Shout... My mother loved it and my dad didn't care much of The Beatles.
I bought a Sepultura cassette when I was 5 or 6. It was during a holiday and we were at the beach and they have it for sale at the grocery store.

Shortly after Top Gun aired on TV for the first time (and subsequently watched numerous times at Grandma's as she had a VCR and my house didn't, I still even have the commercials memorized) I bought my first tape, the TopGun soundtrack... I still get shivers when the theme song breaks into Highway to the Danger Zone!

It was a 45, but I don't remember what it was. Apparently it wasn't that memorable. I was probably 8 or 9 at the time. First album was Let It Be, when it came out. I was about 10. Most of the music I heard growing up came from my parents' jazz records. I loved that stuff and still do. I hated their Broadway show records and still can't stand that kind of music. My mother would listen non-stop to classical music on a scratchy radio. It didn't translate well, and there's still a whole lot of classical music I could do without just fine. They were quirky formative years for my ears.
Unfortunately, certain crevices of my brain no longer function as well as they once did, so details are fuzzy. However, I can say with some certainty that it was a 45 purchased in the music department of a long-defunct Northeastern U.S. department store called Caldor. It may have been Frankie Valli's My Eyes Adored You (1974) or Michael Murphy's Wildfire (1975). The first LP I ever purchased was either the original motion picture soundtrack to Rocky (Bill Conti, 1976) or the original motion picture soundtrack to Star Wars (John Williams, 1977).

I still have it.
Then I grew up, and joined the band. Played alongside the legendary drummer Ron Wilson for over 7 years, longer than any other bassist in the band's history.
That's my 65 jazz bass in the vid...still have that too.
