Fishing Club?

Cool video ray

We wound up chasing blues along the beach on Saturday

Pretty rough getting out the inlet but easy rollers once we got out. Of course the bunker and bass were scattered from Friday nights storm. We had some nice blues though.

Hit the Cholera Bank about 8am yesterday on a friend's Penn Yan 30' boat for fluke. The ocean was flat as a pancake and we had no drift for a few hours. Did manage a few shorts though.

We had been hearing reports on the radio of sharks close in beating up in the bunker pods, but did not see one until yesterday. Around 11:30am we noticed very nervous bait in the water then WHAM! A 7ft thesher pops up right off our stern and starts wacking the bait. When he starts on the third jump, he is heading at our boat on a beeline and lands less then 6 ft. behind us.

My friend Bob who was sitting on the transom, almost knocked me over when he ran past me. It really looked like he was going to land in the cockpit. The guys I was with are hardcore fluke guys and had no interest in the shark and were screaming to get the lines out of the water. They were happy Mr. thresher moved on. Me, I was trying to remember if I had any bluefish hooks with a wire leader to toss at him on my 30# rod!

Once the drift started we got down to business we caught 7 nice keepers with my 24" fish topping the cooler. It was my first of the year (caught it on 4" white Gulp minnow covered in a pink B2 squid) and it felt great. He will be going to my brother-in-laws BBQ later today.

Happy Independence Day to all!!!

Regards-----------

Stinsok,

The old maccas straw lure is possibly one of the best around for small pelagics. We have a fish here called Australian Salmon (Kahawai to New Zealanders) that will eat the straw lure all day long.

Mate of mine went out on Saturday off Sydney here in Australia and landed 2 x Yellowfin Tuna, both around 100lb. He was disappointed because they didn't catch a Mako Shark (go figure...).

I have become a avid fisher starting the past 2 years again. I live in NY and the restrictions on fluke are pretty outrageous. I went yesterday and had a pretty lousy catching day with 2 snappers, 1 baby sea robin, and a small fluke.

There are never any bad fishing days though unless I lose my line somehow :)

Goin' to Gulf Shores this month. I'll be fishing for Skipjacks using a treble hook with a section of McDonald's drinking straw. It works!

Ahhh, the home made gotcha. A spanish mackerel magnet.

They used to put the straws behind the counter at the Ft. Walton McDonalds every spring and keep them there till the pier closed for the winter.

Spent another weekend at the lake but a cool front moved through and the fish were less than enthusiastic. Bass and pike were sitting in the deeper water and only biting on jigs about 15' down.

The biggest of the weekend was my brother's 16" bass.

I got a big surprise while sitting in my canoe fiddling with my reel as I noticed something out of the corner of my eye moving right next to the boat. I looked over and saw a huge snapping turtle poking at my anchor line - it was so close that I could have reached out and patted its head. It was as big as a coffee table and I just about fell out of the boat as it scared the bejeesus out of me. :D
