Flatwound Club

After 3 weeks play with Sadowsky 40-100,i found it break-in faster than previous 760FL and 9050L .Unlike those flat, sadow flat's E string dint become first duller string than other and the G string lose it Zing fairly quick too.... Currently, it sound meaty and tight without thuddy, do a great job in the mix.

The Sads on my P are about six weeks old now and I agree with @Yahboy in that these are a nicely-balanced set right out of the package, not like some flats that start out uneven and take six months to settle.

I also agree the .100E is full-bodied and authoritative without being muddy; all the notes on it ring out clear and punchy. They also seem to cut through the mix better than the 760FL.

Do a maintenance and setup yesterday, i found a Weird vibrato sustain from A string (Sadowsky black label flat).
From first fret till higher fret, those sustain note appear vibrato effect. If i play in short note, those effect are not obvious. But other string's sustain is sound fine .

I suspect my pbass neck first, after make a check and tweek, the problem still pronounce.
Swap with my old 9050L ( because similiar tension as sadow flat), the A string sound fine without vibrato effect.

Does any sadow flat Pbass user meet the problem like me ? Or, i got a defeat A string !?!?!

I would email pic to Sadowsky customer service. That very well could be the cause of the string not sounding right.

Hello flatwound enthusiasts. I've been out of your ranks for a while but I'm getting the itch to come back. I've got D'Addario ProSteels on my Squier Special Precision V, Dunlop Super Bright SS on my Schecter Raiden Special-4 and D'Addario Tapes on my Ibanez AEB5E.

Thinking I would like to try the following-

Sadowsky Black Label 40-125T for my Squier
Rotosound RS77 40-90 Medium Scale for my Ibanez acoustic
Ernie Ball Cobalt 40-95 for my Schecter

That adds up to $115.53 worth of strings from BSO. Whoa..

I've had Ernie Ball Cobalts on my Schecter tuned BEAD but I think I would like to try them in light gauge and standard tuning.

In the past I've tried the following-

La Bella Deep Talkin' flats
D'Addario Chromes
Fender 9050 (new version)
GHS Precision flats
Ernie Ball Cobalt flats

I get an used CV jazz last week, play with dead stock roundwound string, stock pup sound thin and low output compare to my CV P ( SPB-1 ) + Labella 760FL .

First, i strung an old Fender 9050L and swap the stock .022uf cap to .047uf cap, yes, roll off some tone, i get fuller sound BUT lack hi-mid and treble.

Put a set of broke-in Sadowsky flat, the stock pup sound much better , focus , crisp and really sweet sounding. But, lack warm and round sounding.

So, i swap with broke-in Dark sounding Labella 760FL , overall sound become warm, fat and full, but lack some mid and hi. Finally i put the .022 cap back, now, ovearll sound warm and round from low to hi.

760FL lacking some focus tone from Sadowsky, But it balance the thin sound stock CV J pup.

I regret to sold the harsh sounding Fender Original P pup, i think this Dark sounding broke-in 760FL would a good match with it.

And i totally recommand Sadowsky Flat for Jazz Bass and P bass.

Do you guy agree " Pickups is Preset Tone, String is Preset EQ , Capacitor is Filter " ?

I just tried TI Flats for the first time today. I put them on a Fiesta Red 50's P bass I just picked up. It's as close to the Paladino bass I will get. They have a great warm tone. They are the most flexible flats I have played to date. I was concerned they would be too flexible, but they felt nice and well balanced. YMMV

Both broke in 760FL and Sadow flat become similiar tension while i do neck relief setup. Both CV J and CV P exchange those string.

But, while play with finger style , I found Sadowsky is smoother than 760FL and feel little stiff with 760FL.

I'll take 4378 if it's available. For myself, my '64 Precision L-series and LaBella 1954's. I've had the bass since 1977, 39 years. Much longer than any female has stayed with me. Except for my cat. She stayed around for 19 years. A perfect relationship. Although she was rather strong-willed. Like the others. But I digress. Anyway I'm climbing aboard this flat, bottom boat so AHOY!

My Warwick has D'Addario Prelude 4/4 Cello strings (nickel flatwound), tuned C2-G2-D3-A3. My StingRay has TI Jazz Flats, and I've just ordered a set of Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 flats for my Jazz Plus V.

In stock in my studio are: TI Jazz Flats JF345 (plus some singles); Rotosound RS776LD, RS77LE, and SM77 (for an experiment later with the StingRay in fifths, C1-G1-D2-A2); and a pack of Ernie Ball Group Something or Others (III? 45-105 I think).

I've also just sent a letter to D'Addario about the possibility of using 1/10 or 1/8 Double Bass Helicore Orchestra strings on the StingRay.

5 th's? Do you play cello? I'm a Red Mitchell. I love how he adapted to 5th's. He said it opened up the sound of his bass. I wonder if it would have the same effect on a bass guitar. Let me know!

Just as an update, I'm here to share the last six months of my string journey...

Aug 2015 - My Fender Jazz, my only bass at the time, had been wearing the Fender 9050L for five months. After reading so many rave reviews, I decided to try the GHS Pressurewound (44-58-80-102) to spice things up a bit. They turn out to be a great match for my J with just enough round-ish tone to bring out the growl without the typical zing of rounds.

Sept 2015 - I finally acquired a long-awaited P bass (2014 Fender Am Std) and decided to go for the classic thump by dressing it up with a set of La Bella 760FL. Wow, there's the HUGE bottom people always talk about!

Oct 2015 - Again, based on rave reviews, I get an itch for trying out a set of the Sadowsky Flats Lite (40-100) on my J. Very disappointing mainly because my J has always been very fussy with the 40G, which always ends up sounding too "twangy". Back to the GHS Pressurewound after two weeks.

Dec 2015 - After three months with the La Bella 760FL, I decided my new P was sounding a bit too bottom-heavy for my taste, ie too much thump and not enough punch. A P bass with La Bella flats is great for that old-school Motown vibe but I wanted something a bit lighter and more articulate for a clear and punchy tone. Here comes the Sadowsky Lite and BINGO! I've found a perfect match!

Feb 2016 - After six months with the Pressurewounds, I get a sudden urge to put flats on my J again, this time the 3-mth-old 760FL that had come off of the P. An interesting combination, to say the least, these La Bellas made my J sound like a completely different bass. I even got comments from a couple of people (a vocalist and an audio tech) about my J sounding "full and meaty" and "thick and juicy". Then I realized my J was actually sounding too much like a P-bass-wannabe.

Mar 2016 - I finally decided to put the 5-mth-old Fender 9050L back on my J and you know what, this feels like home. Sure, my J sounds mellower with them than with the Pressurewounds, but it still sounds like a J with a hint of grrrowl and lots of purrr.

I think it's time for me to come to terms with the simple fact I'm a die-hard flatwound junkie. :D

I'll take #56. Don't think that one is taken...

Best old school flat - TI with Fender P or J
Best new school flat - EB Slinky Cobalt on Sadowsky Jazz
Best Hofner/Beatle Sound - Pyramid Golds
Testing out now - LaBella Flexible Flats, the new Dunlop Flats....

When I got my Music Man Sub Ray 4 a couple of years ago, I cured it of excessive fretting noise by fitting a set of Rotosound 45-105 77 Jazz flatwounds, and it has played happily ever after, so when the r/w's on my Squier Jaguar Shortscale Vintage needed renewing, I repeated the exercise, using 40-90s this time of course. However, the results have not been as promising, and the strings themselves do not seem to be of the same quality as their full-size counterparts - whereas the latter are shiny and symmetrical, these are dull, and the A string appears to have been soldered along its length. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about this please ?
