Flatwounds?

I always keep one of my basses (the Gibson EB3) stung with flats. The Rick, the Carvin, and the Squire always have rounds, The Hofner has flats, and the Epiphone has rounds.
I usually bring, at least, one bass stung with each to all gigs.
 
I do agree that in most circumstances modern usage of the word "pair" means two of something grouped together in like fashion. Kind of like the old joke that a guy wore a black sock and a blue sock to work one day. When pointed out, he looked quizzically and replied, "Hmm. Fancy that. And I have another pair just like them, just backwards, at home!"
