St Pete has been the hot spot lately (mostly 662 or state theater for us), Ybor is ok for locals (at least of the original rock genre, there is like 2 clubs left that do live music, and the big venue the Ritz doesn't really do locals), North Tampa has a few things that are ok (hard draw though). been trying to branch out a little the surrounding areas, Sarasota, Lakeland, Orlando, etc etc.
how's palmetto? I played a gig down at peggy's corral once, not bad for a biker gig. it was with a tribute band though, so that helped. one of my uncles used to run the Kojak's rib house down there if you are familiar. its closed now unfortunately.

I don't think it would be worth venturing south of Sarasota. I'm in Ft Myers and their isn't really anything going on down here. The area is growing again however, so their is still hope yet. Of course the growth isn't keeping up with the infrastructure so getting to a gig may take a while!

We've been trying to get into the 662/State Theatre scene, but their booking agent hasn't had anything available. I've e-mailed 662 individually, too, and not heard anything back. As far as Palmetto/Bradenton there isn't much here for live music (the Greek restaurant where Kojak's was is delicious, though). You might check out Independent Jones. That's my friend's promotional company. He's trying to book more acts in the area and they're working on building a dedicated music venue in Bradenton. He's also in charge of a bi-annual event called the Pickin' Picnic here that features multiple bands of varying styles. This time around is more of a folk theme, but they've had local punk and rock bands play it in the past.

662 has a couple people that book there, but down there its all in who you know. the main people are "night of the living sound productions" (they have a fb page), its run by someone affiliated with the bar, and there is a promoter who does a lot of gigs there too, but he's kind of one of those guys you have to be introduced to first. the same guy does a lot of the locals booking for state theater shows too, playing at state usually requires ticket sales of some kind, so keep that in mind. personally, I like playing 662, the stage is smaller, but I like the sound better, and its a bar with music so you get a lot of foot traffic, where as state is a venue with a bar and only people who are going to whatever show go there. however, rocking that big stage is fun!
Fubar is right next door to 662, and its a hipster-y bar, small stage, but that place packs up pretty good too. unfortunately I have only ever booked gigs through other bands there. I know the guy who books there, or at least the sound guy who I think does it, but he's not easy to get in contact with either.
We tried getting into Fubar once and the booking agent (some lady, can't remember her name) totally flaked and never wrote anyone back. She was a friend of one of the bands playing, too! Checked with Fubar and they had no idea that they were going to have bands that night and they politely declined to have us. I'll check out night of the living sound and see if I can get anywhere with them. Thanks!
good luck man, I think the guy at 662 name is Nick, he's the one you want to talk to. I think I remember the lady you are talking about, never could get anywhere with her either, but I think now the guy who does it at Fubar is Todd.
I played recently in Sarasota at a bar called the Cabana that was not bad also, turned out better than I thought. hopefully we can make it down there again. its run by the singer of the death metal band "Atheist". it was fun to meet him, we did a "stoner rock" night there with a couple of other like-minded bands and he seemed really into it and had some fun stories to hear.
