Both of my fretless 5s are strung B-G, and both have GREAT B-strings. Both are very focused and clear and punchy. One is a 34", the other a 35" w/piezo.

If you want some recordings of fretless with a low-B, I can recommend: Mark Egan - As We Speak and Truth Be Told, Jeff Ciampa (w/Mark E.) - House of Mirrors, and anything by Gary Willis.

There's a ton of other stuff, too, but those come to mind immediately.

Agreed completely! I'm always learning things here, too!

I hope Jason doesn't mind me posting this, but my dealer sent me an image Jason sent him to make sure the ramp setup was what I was asking for. (Let me know if you want me to remove it, Jason!)

It's EXACTLY what I was hoping for. They completely nailed it. :hyper:

I didn't ask for the matching wood grain, though- that's just an added bonus! Obviously it isn't finished yet.

The width comes from the fact that inside the shells are Lane Poors, so it's a pickup in a shell in a shell, which makes it wider than normal. I didn't actually need it to be that wide, but it's unavoidable. It's not a negative to me, though, as I hate ramps that end just past the string. I don't anchor my thumb anywhere so it's perfect.

I don't know- I've seen them do it before but I don't remember too many times that they've done it. I certainly wasn't expecting it!

It'll arrive when it's done, whenever that ends up being. Looks pretty close! :)

Angus' bass will be done tomorrow or Thursday at the latest (assuming we do not get ANOTHER darn blizzard). We do try to match the ramp / pups to the top, but it is very rare that we can nail it this closely as we need to have a piece of material that is identical to what lies underneath it in order to do so. In this case, we were able to cut a thin slice from the top and use that for the ramp / pup covers...it took a lot of hours to get it just right, but it was a LOT of fun too!!

We all are dying to hear this beauty as we no longer use Lane Poors and almost never build with a Maple body, so to say we are intrigued would be an under-statement!!

P.S. For future reference to all...if we send you a picture...unless we specifically say "please don't share this," then all is good in terms of posting...it is YOUR instrument...we are just acting as its midwife...

Angus, I really like your bass for the most part. The ramp stuff looks terrible to me though. Not just on your bass, any bass. I think this whole ramp thing is a bit silly but to each their own. The wide pickup covers are too much as well. I've liked some Lane Poor's but they were so inconsistent from pup to pup I don't know if I'd feel comfortable trying them on a bass such as this. But either way, your bass is very nice.

i went old school and only played the fenders on that gig. 62 jazz and the 78 jazz through an outboard coppolo preamp using an old school coil cable for the extra capacitance. hows that for geek:D

i think a while back you said something about anything i was doing on my fodera, i could just as well be doing on a jazz bass. you were pretty much right;)
