just a quick question for you guys: how would a holly top affect the overall sound on a fodera? i guess the top wood is mainly decorative, but taking into account this wood's properties, hardness etc. where would it fall into place with the other top woods?

as far as I know (and Jason told me from his experience being in the shop) Holly has a dence sth. like maple.

My upcoming Imperial will have a solid Holly top as well ;)

We can get the Neck-through and Bolt-on FB height closer to the height of the bodies than we can on the Dovetails due to their designs. We need to leave a certain amount of wood on the Dovetails to allow for a sturdy glue joint...

The conventional wisdom is that Bolt-ons are the most punchy and Neck-throughs have the most sustain and that Dovetails come in somewhere between. To test this thesis, over the next couple of months we are building three identical Monarch 5's as far as woods are concerned -- including ensuring that all three come from the very same pieces of wood. The only thing different will be the neck construction. One will be a Bolt-on, one a Dovetail and one a Neck through.

We plan on then having one of our artists play exactly the same track with each instrument and record them so that all of us can hear the difference for ourselves.

no I did not - the first top was an Ebony top but after a few weeks I found out that I want to have the "white" look - since then (8 month) nothing changed with my choice of top wood - but I will do some new changes to the final specs of my Bass ;)

Holly is a fairly dense, heavy wood...not as bright as Sugar Maple, but similar to a lot of other maples that we use...

Thanks Jason - that makes sence regarding the dovetail joint.

As for the Bolt-Ons :

Did the height on your Bolt-ons has moved down over the last years or is just possible as a special request ?

Is it possible to get the same (or nearly the same) height like on a neck-through on your Bolt-on basses ???

No, I actually misspoke earlier about the YYS...the new run will be the same as the initial ones. I was remembering the drop in height of the FB that we did when we moved over from the NYC's to the YYS.

The height of the FB's on the Bolt-ons and Neck-throughs are fairly similar...

So there used to be a drop in height ? Very cool

Did also the bridge "moved back" (towards the edge of the body) a little ???

If heard in the past and also had the impression that the bridges on Bolt-ons also used to sit a little more direction neck so that you had to stretch your arm a little wider (to reach the first frets) on the older models ??

I'm asking because I had the impression that the bridge on the newer Bolt-Ons sits on the same position like on the Deluxe / Elites....

Because a few month ago I was checking out an older Emperor Bolt-on ... from the mid 90ies I guess and that height was really high... like a Fender without the pickguard....

here's a shot from the latest Fodera documentary and here I first got the impression that sth. has happened to the neck height of the Bolt-Ons...

So the change came when you developed the first YYS ???

The Dove Neck does not mean that the space between body and strings has to be higher than on a NT bass. The YY Deluxe I owned was a very good example: DT neck with very low action and lower space between body and strings than on a regular DT Monarch I owned. It´s just a matter of taste.

Some people added a pickguard to their DT basses, mostly people who play a tradtional slap bass approach.

Great news. I look forward to more and more Fodera official sound/video clips!

PS, another question here. I noticed that very few foderas were finished other than natural satin (if any?). Is that because you don't offer a finish in any other specific color? or just because everyone wants nothing but a [DEL] buckeye burl top [/DEL] fancy natural top for an instrument at this level...

You should do a dovetail chambered one while you at it.

I do not agree. If you refer to the YYD you got from me it had the same fb height like all other Deluxes I owned. Please read Jason's post #93 in this thread.

It's of course a matter of taste and personal style of playing whether you prefer more or less distance between strings and top, but it is not an option independent from the neck joint I guess - as always, for enough money you might get everything you want....

I also haven't seen Deluxes with pickguards - but a lot of Bolt-Ons.

Anyway - I personally prefer the string height of the Elites every day.
