It had paid the low end a visit. Then it traveled around and ended up at Kebos. He sent it in to Fodera and had a full setup done and then got bought from my friend.

I am not sure if they have. I use to own a Hilton bass with a blood wood board. It sounded great! Good blood wood is a bit scarce these days. I inquired about getting a monarch made with a blood wood top about a year ago and Jason told me the scoop. A lot of what is around these days kind of resembles koa in color.

If I'm not mistaken, one of Hou's basses has the same Tulipwood top and f/b combination. Perhaps he will drop in with a few comments.

I THINK this top was one that I saw in Brooklyn in March. I couldn't believe a couple of tops they were working on were for Standards. I thought Jason was showing me upcharge tops.
This is an amazing looking bass in any case.

Feedback needed: I am currently getting ready to order a new custom build and I was considering an ebony top, ash body, Birdseye fingerboard. Someone recently told me to stay away from ebony tops because it will squash the tone. Anyone have any feedback on tone of that combination. I do a lot of tapping and slapping

I really like the tops on the Standards. When I first took mine out of the case, all I could say was wow. What is really amazing is the satin finish, seems just the perfect complement and on the neck it feels amazing. It's really funny how suddenly my playing is shaping up immensely since I got mine. Must be groove pixie dust.
Oh, I was wondering again on strings for the E5S. Assuming I move to a .130 tapered low B, I know the bridge side will require lowering a bit, but will I have to recut the nut side to compensate for the larger diameter? I'm thinking yes but I thought I would ask an expert. Still a Fodera newbie.
Whoever said that is silly. I've had a lot of basses with ebony and katalox (similar) tops, and none of them have "squashed tone". That combo would sound great- the ebony just gives the tone a bunch of brightness/snap, as it does in a fingerboard.
yeah, i don't really feel that ebony tops make something sound squashed. i have three and i don't feel they sound "more squashed" than the maple or zebrano tops i have. wonder if the bass they we playing had a lot of glossy finish on it . . . which would sound squashed, imho.

That fella sounds like an expert. You better follow his advice to the letter.
