Ok, so I wanted to get a little video posted with me and the new girl. It was recorded on an iPad, so the audio isn't very good. I tried to enhance it as best as I could. Annoyingly, when I switched to the Moog during the Bruno Mars tune, it wasn't loud enough to hear so the bottom drops out... And I screwed up the beginning of the song.

The video is of my agency corporate/wedding band. I feel incredibly lucky not just to have this bass, but play along side with some insane crazy good musicians.

The songs are all shortened because once a month, we bring prospective clients in and give them a little taste of what we do.

Of course last night was also the first (and second) practice for the Melbourne F-1 race and so getting 3 hours of sleep on top of yesterday afternoon has left me feeling a little less festive today! LOL.

Saw Anthony Jackson last night in a nice small venue in Chicago with Oz Noy and Dave Weckl.

Anthony was the friggin' voice of god. I don't know if the bass he is using now is somewhat new (I know he is always revising and tweaking) but it just sounded amazing. Actually, quite growly and grind (like a P bass when you really dig in), but MASSIVE down low. Much more organic and fat versus some of his recorded tones of late. Totally dug it... passive and massive.... that is a great combination!

He really is a unique player. That trio dug DEEP last night. And, Brian Blade was doing a clinic right up the street and was staying in the same hotel as I was, so got to chat with him a bit this morning.

Quite a Thursday night for me.

Anyway, on topic, that Fodera (run right through the Bag End front of house system) was among the most amazing live tones I've ever heard!

He did have a Bag End cab behind him, which I assume was a house cab (since the entire PA and monitors was Bag End in this club). Definitely all the sound to the audience was coming from the front of house though. He did have his volume pedal hooked up, but never touched it. From the massive low end, I would not be surprised if they had an ELF system going on with the subs... just guessing there.

He had some strange looking unit on top of that backline Bag End cab, but didn't look like it was on (no lights). About the size of an LMII, brushed aluminum or steal case, long, oval 'black' sort of front end, no knobs/no lights. Maybe a power amp driving that Bag End for personal monitoring.

Interesting that he did two extended solos (Anthony typically does not solo from what I understand). Very complex, chordal solos, using the WHOLE range of the instrument.

I REALLY dug the tone. That 'passive P Bass' when you really hit it sort of aggressive upper midrange grind, but combined with massive, clean, open low end. Really something.

In Hiromi trio his solos are within the context of conversations with the other players. They essentially take turn "speaking" while the others are supporting. Some of the most amazing things I've ever heard. Very different from traditional "solos". He does use all of his registers as well, and fingers, thumbs, picks, etc. Incredible player.

Same thing last night. The comping that Oz and Weckl were doing was as interesting and complex as the solos themselves.

I am enjoying the most recent Hiromi trio CD with Anthony also. Equally deep in a different way.

I was able to see the Hiromi trio in Boston a few months ago. I was able to sit about four feet from the stage. It was a near religious experience. All three musicians way on top of their game.

IMHO, I really think you need to see AJ live to truly appreciate what he does with a bass.

Those of us here in the Bay Area were looking forward to seeing this trio earlier last Sunday at Yoshis San Francisco. Unfortunately, Oz Noy had to be taken to the hospital before the gig and both shows were cancelled. 8-(

The silver box on top of the Bag End is a Bel Canto Class D amp. It's most often used in very high-end audiophile systems. He paired it with an Avalon U5 and an Epifani 410 for the "SF gig that never was". The rest of the signal chain was his usual Presentation #10, Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, and a Jam Pedal that I didn't recognize. FOH at Yoshis is all Meyers.

Although it was really a bummer to miss this show, he's headed back this way in April with Hiromi's trio. Looking forward to seeing, hearing and speaking with him then.

Thanks for the info on the power amp. I figured that is what it had to be, but had no idea of the brand or whatever. I did not see a U5 on stage, but his cable ran behind the cab, so he probably had it sitting on the ground somewhere.

Hopefully, the Hiromi gig will happen for you!
