I think I have decided on a mango top for my fretless. I should have some pics in the next day or two, but it is almost a year out.



My fretted is curly walnut and will be ready in Jan. I picked the top out at the Fodera shop in March. Same batch as Nostatic's bass and the M4S Fretless. I am looking forward to this one too!

To be honest, picking a top is really hard as they are all incredible. Yeah Nostatic's caught my eye as well,
which kept me pondering and then the "what the hell" reasoning kicked in and there you go. The newborn
section of the Fodera makes you throw all sensibility out the window.

So is this mango wood the same trees that the mango fruit is from? If it is, boy was my grandfather dumb to
cut his tree down years ago. LOL

I didn't know it was the same top as Nostatic's until after I picked it, but it was hard as there were 4 or 5 other ways I could have gone. The acetone REALLY helps as I have no idea what basically any wood looks like finished without stain on a guitar.

Same mango, but the trees I have seen have been pretty big. Not really super rare from what I see but it might be a P.I.T.A. to work with but I have no clue. I just like the look of the mango I have seen!

Most of the ones we have out this way are 15 to 20 ft. In height. Back when I was a kid everyone had the fruit tree thing going on,
the most popular being coconuts, mangoes, and tangerines. In my childhood it meant a summer of raking leaves and picking fruit.
Of the hardwoods out here, it's Koa and Ohia which is similar to Koa. The more abundant stuff is on the island of Hawaii, which is where
a lot of the Koa and Ohia come from. Much of the older homes here had flooring made from these two woods. Today most of it is reserved
for high end furniture and the tidbits that usually go out to guitar manufacturers. You do see a lot of Koa used in ukulele production
here along with imported mahogany from various parts of Asia.

The mango must be really old wood and should look really cool finished up.

Thanks to Jason and Dave at Ultimate for finding me a killer top for my Monarch 5 fretless build!

I wanted something other than walnut or maple and they came up with a couple of great options that didn't break the bank. In the end, this piece of spalted mango just looks amazing to me. Over a walnut body and ebony board, I think it will look killer.

I can't wait to see what this looks like finished!

jason, have you guys ever used ash for a fingerboard wood? i assume there are reasons one would not . . .

I've heard a bass that was all Ash... zing city. Just substituting a Maple board really seemed to tame the zing.

Not sure what an Ash board on a non Ash neck might sound like. On an Ash neck it was like Wenge on Wenge gone wild.
