Fodera Club Part XXII

I played at a festival for charity Sunday with the YYD, and when I was leaving the stage area, Kevin Brubaker was gracious enough to introduce himself to me, and in our conversation, said I sounded good. Even if he was just being nice, it was cool and classy.

I am a former Lakland endorser and had a sweet Amber 55-02 that is as good or better than any US Lakland I had to compare directly to my ES5 up until just a few weeks ago. The best thing about Lakland was their neck and their flexibility in terms of tones available on the 44 and 55 series basses. I have owned multiple Darryl Jones, Duck Dunns, Decades, and Joe Osbornes. I LOVE and prefer the neck on the ES5! I LOVE everything about the ES5! So much so that I have an ES5 Special on order as well. My ES5 weighs just over 9 lbs and does not bother me at all weight wise. I have a degenerative bone disease in my back and am pretty sensitive to weight but the ES5 works wonderfully for me and I have NO complaints at all about it. I would love to have a Fodera with the electronics capabilities of the 55 series but I am digging it just the way it is to be honest. At this point I only see myself playing Fodera and have now sold ALL my other basses and only own the ES5 and a Yin Yang Standard. This is quite a feat for me I know but they really are that good!

I happily played a pair of Zon 5s for about a decade. My main bass was a fretless with Lightwave electronics (1st gen). Magic bass. A few years back I decided it was time for a change and went on a merry-go-round of various high-end basses. At some point I finally played a YYS and that was that. I continued to dabble with some other great brands, but now have 3 Foderas in the house along with my Rob Allen Deep 4 fretless. I won't sell the RA as it does something that no other bass really can, but I don't gig it very often. I just prefer playing the Foderas as I can get the sounds I want and they inspire me to go places I normally might not try. Can't ask for much more than that...

The MSF4 is its own self, and isn't like any other brand. It plays very nicely, as the neck shape is good. I'm not familiar with this preamp, so some knob turning will be in order, but I like the custom preamp better, or am more familiar with it. It's heavy, that may bother some. Everybody that heard it last Friday loved it, but it's a Fodera. It will come down to whether the sound it has is the sound you want. It can definitely cop the Jaco tone, but I haven't found the old P sound yet. As I said, it plays like a Monarch, but it is not a custom. If you are spoiled by those extra features, get a custom.YMMV

The dual coils don't have a P sound imho. I've looked for it - I can't find it. That is one reason my YYD is my main instrument.

That said I think the dual coil bridge pup works really well for fretless - probably better than a single coil. So a P/DC would be the hot ticket imho.

wrt the preamp, I think it can sound close to the custom, it just isn't as subtle.
