looks like a derivation of the first fodera 6-string, circa 1983, but updated. i think jumbodbassman has one with this basic shape? (sorry if this is wrong, it's late and i'm two glasses of wine in . . . )
original style, later pickups. nice bass. price seems way too high

The perception of the Emperor is that it's "big," but they are so well balanced that that is not even an issue(they are actually not big anyway). My Emperor5 Bolt-On is just about 10 lbs but it feels so good that I don't even notice when I'm playing.
I agree with Tommixx. I am an inveterate 4-string fretless player. My Emperor, which is a fretted 5er, has become my number one go to bass. Its the first 5 string I've ever owned but the neck is so sweet that I really didn't have to make much of an adjustment. I owned a Fodera NYC4 and have played a few Monarch 4s but even as a (formerly) mainly 4-string player the Emperor just immediately felt more comfortable to me.
As far as the sound is concerned, IMO this bass can be used for any style of music. Even though the E5S for example is designed to fit any playing situation, it is far from generic. Like all Foderas these basses are so sensitive to the individual player that even though you can find just about any tone the bass always sounds like you.

A big +1 to that. I am finding that my E5S is super versatile, and I can dial in about any "classic tone" that I am looking for. In addition, it has a "baseline" tone that is just... well... what "bass" should sound like (in my head, at least). And the feel is spot on just "right," as well. I really couldn't be happier with my E5S.

looks to be a maple body which would be very heavy (like yours, right?).
i like it due to the fact that it is completely unusual from my knowledge: 85 started with the split-p style pickup and the second aj style body, but this has something that looks like the first aj body with two pickups. kinda rad.
and, yeah, way too much $$, imho.
Tried searching the forum for a breakdown of John D'Ercole's specs, but couldn't find it. Anyone know the specs on his Fodera?

I do agree the Emperor is comfortable, but I do find it big vs. The Monarch. Just IMO. Not too big, just bigger.
I love my E5S, but my customs are going to be Monarchs.
jason, if you're around today . . . is there any instruction/photo documentation of how to wire one of the old haz labs preamps? i'm asking publicly as there may be other besides me who care . . .
I don't know if I still have it with me or if it is in storage, but I have the wiring diagram for the old Haz Lab preamp. I had to repair a preamp from a late-80s (I think?) Fodera for a friend and I made the diagram for it.
I'll see if I have it with me here in California.

What would be cool would be a history of the AJ Contrabass in pictorial form from the initial
ones all the way up to the new Presentation II.

well, there's the shape that jumbodbassman has (similar to this body shape), with a reverse split p made from emg pickups, then the version 2 body with the same reverse-p style pickup, then this apparent missing link ( ;-) ), then the second body shape with the two barts (and then lane poors/aeros/duncans in the style). then presentation.

mine are all 34. there are also 35 and 33 6-strings out there.
i'm not sure when they started doing 36, but i don't think it's ever been exclusive. it think there's a guy on fb who has a 92 or so (64X serial number) that is a 36.
Cool bass, but I like the headstock and upper horn much better on a Monarch or Emperor. Just IMO of course....
